Situated near the Bois d' Arc Creek, Whitewright was founded in 1878 by investor and financier William Whitewright, Jr. The Whitewright Public Library opened in 1967, spurred by a 1966 presentation by the Whitewright Friday Literary Club, titled, "Does Our Town Need a Library?" Since then, the library serves a population of just over 2,000, from the city of Whitewright, as well as from wider Fannin and Grayson Counties.
