Bancroft Shingle Mill Crew in 1880

Description: Photograph of the Bancroft Shingle Mill Crew. There are twenty-seven men, all standing except seven who are seated. One row of men are standing on the ground and the other row is on a platform behind them. The men are wearing button-up shirts, some are wearing vests, suspenders or jackets and all except one are wearing hats. In the foreground are wooden beams and bits of wood. Written on or above some of the men are the numbers 1 through 10.

Description: Sunbonnet of black cotton with lace trim; rows of machine quilting echo the rounded edge of the brim; self-fabric ruffle trims edge of brim; crown is sewn to brim in a flat seam on sides, and gathered on top; tail has a trim of floral pattern machine lace with no center back seam; chin ties and narrow hemmed.

Description: Hat of green felt in the style of a tricorne or cocked hat. Trimmed with green silk roses, brown feathers, a brass buckle on right side and bow on back. Lined in black with central "drawstring".

Description: Hat in bonnet style of black straw with black velvet bow topped with lace at the crown. Gathered black lace on back; flat top 3" deep crown with center back side of crown cut for hair bun; 2 1/4" slightly downward brim; underbrim covered with gathered black crepe; brown cambric lining.
