Car-Brake.

Description: Patent for a car brake that has independent brake shoes and brake pressure is equally applied to all the wheels of the truck. The invention is meant to "obtain in a car brake of this class a central transmission of the applied brake power to the different groups of brake mechanism whereby the brake power is distributed equally to each wheel and the brakes are not only rendered more stable and certain in their operation, but are better adapted for the application of either hand or air brake or pressure" (lines 22-31). The brake shoes are operated by a lever that is suspended from the truck body and pivots.

Lantern.

Description: Patent for a lantern "in which a candle is used as a light-giving medium, and in which the chimney is tightly supported on the base of the lantern and around the candle, so that the light is fully protected against extinguishment by wind, and a cheap and convenient article is supplied" (lines 9-15). The lantern has a raised base with a candle socket in the middle, and the glass chimney is securely attached to the base. A frame and handle is attached to the base and top of the chimney.

Description: Patent for a bicycle that can be operated by the operator's hands or feet or both, and the motion used to operate the bicycle is that of rowing. "the rider must assume a position upon the machine corresponding to that assumed by an oarsman in a boat, and as the rider can work with both hands and feet all the energy and strength he is capable of exerting can be brought to bear upon the propelling mechanism in a most effective manner, and the seat can be rendered much more comfortable than at present and in no wise interfere with the rider's movements" (lines 18-27).
