Davis states that she was with her sister-in-law Barbara Jeanette Davis at the time and heard gunshots while inside her apartment. She went outside to see a man unloading his gun in her yard. Police Officer J. D. Tippit had been shot and was lying in the street. Davis found an empty shell in her yard, and later identified the man she saw in her yard in a police lineup.
