Laboratory and field performance measurements to support the implementation of warm mix asphalt in Texas

Description: An objective of this study was to monitor the performance of more than 10 warm mix asphalt (WMA) projects in the state. Several WMA technologies were included in the study (foaming, Advera, Evotherm, Rediset, Sasobit) and it was determined that performance of the warm mix was comparable to hot mix. In addition, mix from two warm mix projects were subjected to different curing times and temperatures and then evaluated for mixture volumetrics and performance properties. Results from this study lend support to the current procedures the Texas Department of Transportation has adopted.

Microsurfacing in Texas

Description: This report describes the current state of practice of microsurfacing in Texas and compares it to best practices extracted from existing literature. A survey of DOT personnel, contractors and emulsion suppliers in Texas provides insight into the most crucial factors contributing to the success or failure of a microsurfacing. From the results of the survey, literature reviews, case studies and site visits, the research team analyzed material selection and mix design methods, construction practices, equipment practices and performance measures for microsurfacings.

Non-vital advance rail preemption of signalized intersections near highway-rail grade crossings

Description: The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) primarily uses simultaneous preemption of traffic signals near highway-rail grade crossings to clear queued vehicles prior to the arrival of a train at the crossing. At some intersections, 20 seconds of advanced warning may not be sufficient to allow the traffic signal to clear pedestrians using the normal clearance intervals between phases. The research developed an alternative method (non-vital advance preemption) of ensuring adequate pedestrian clearance in the presence of an approaching train without interfering with the normal preemption sequence at the intersection or installing costly additional track circuitry needed to provide advance preemption. Two strategies were investigated to ensure pedestrian clearance time. The first utilizes a lower-level preemption sequence to guarantee full pedestrian clearance to a terminating phase before the traffic signal starts the preemption sequence. The second strategy uses the pedestrian-omit feature to prevent the controller from activating the pedestrian interval if there is not sufficient time in advance of the start of the preemption sequence to provide full pedestrian clearance.

Exploratory study : vehicle mileage fees in Texas

Description: This project evaluates Vehicle Mileage (VM) fees as a possible funding mechanism for meeting the State of Texas' long-term transportation needs. Researchers conducted listening sessions with the general public and stakeholders to gather input on the concept. Researchers also prepared a decision matrix that can aid policy makers in evaluating the various trade-offs in policy that will be encountered in vehicle mileage fee system development. This study identified both challenges and opportunities for implementation of VM fees.

Performance monitoring pavements with thermal segregation in Texas

Description: This report investigated the performance of asphalt surface mixtures that exhibited thermal segregation during construction from 2004 to 2009. The results do not show that thermally segregated locations will fail within three to seven years but they do show that instances of thermal segregation may continue to be anomalous locations in the layer that could lead to failures in the pavement structure.

Applying the Systems Engineering Approach to Video Over IP Projects

Description: Abstract: In 2009, the Texas Transportation Institute produced for the Texas Department of Transportation a document called Video over IP Design Guidebook. This report summarized an implementation of that project in the form of a workshop. The workshop was developed and presented as a pilot in Austin in 2010 and taught an additional four times in 2011 in Fort Worth, Lubbock, Houston, and San Antonio.

Continuous prestressed concrete girder bridges. Volume 1, Literature review and preliminary designs

Description: "The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is currently designing typical highway bridge structures as simply supported using standard precast, pretension-ed girders. TxDOT is interested in developing additional economical design alternatives for longer span bridges, through the use of the continuous precast, pretension-ed concrete bridge structures that use spliced girder technology. The objectives of this portion of the study are to evaluate the current stat-of-the-art and practice relevant to continuous precast concrete girder bridges and recommend suitable continuity connections for use with typical Texas bridge girders."

Developing a mixture design specification for flexible base construction

Description: "In the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), flexible base producers typically generate large stockpiles of material exclusively for TxDOT projects. This large "state-only" inventory often maintained by producers, along with time requirements for testing and reduced manpower within TxDOT offices, resulted in this project's investigation into a mixture-design specification for flexible base. The goals of this project are to develop a flexible base specification that reduces TxDOT's burden for sampling and testing, reduces time and space burdens on producers for maintaining TxDOT-only stockpiles, and maintains or improves the quality of the base."

Performance of lap splices in large-scale column specimens affectedby ASR and/or DEF

Description: "This research program conducted a large experimental program, which consisted of the design, construction, curing, deterioration, and structural load testing of 16 large-scale column specimens with a critical lap splice region, and then compared and calibrated models developed in the analytical program with the experimental behavior. Specimens were carefully instrumented both internally and externally to monitor the strain behavior of the concrete and reinforcing steel from specimen construction, curing, deterioration, and final structural load testing."

Accommodating oversize and overweight loads: technical report

Low cost wireless network camera sensors for traffic monitoring

Description: Many freeways and arterials in major cities in Texas are presently equipped with video detection cameras to collect data and help in traffic/incident management. In this study, carefully controlled experiments determined the throughput and output quality of various communication configurations. Configurations entailed antennas at several cost levels and it was determined that the least expensive antennas were adequate only for one-hop systems. Via a survey to which 20 districts responded, incidents, volume, and speed were found to be the functionalities most in demand for autonomous surveillance systems. Most systems are monitored by human operators. An alternative to operator-based video monitoring is video analytics. An autonomous traffic monitoring system from a vendor was tested. A demonstration surveillance system was developed and delivered to the Texas Department of Transportation.

Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware test 3-11 of the Texas Department of Transportation Portable Concrete Traffic Barriers with sign support assembly

Description: This report presents the details of the design developed for mounting the traffic control sign support on top a portable concrete traffic barrier (PCTB), description of the full scale crash test performed on the design, and an assessment and evaluation of the performance of the PCTB with the sign support mounted on top according to specifications of "Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware" (MASH). The PCTB mounted sign support assembly anchored to the top of the TxDOT Type 2 PCTB tested for this project performed acceptably for MASH test 3-11.

Development of Texas Transportation Institute's asphalt compaction monitoring system

Description: "In recent years, the Texas Department of Transportation has made significant progress with the development and implementation of new technologies to measure the uniformity of new hot mix asphalt layer construction. In Project 0-6992, researchers took this check one step further by developing an accurate global positioning system tracking system for compaction rolling so that the compaction effort applied can be monitored for 100 percent of the new surface. This report presents details of the hardware and software developed in this study. The system was field tested on a number of new overlay projects in Texas."

Research and recommendations for a statewide sign retroreflectivity maintenance program

Description: "This report evaluated Texas Department of Transportation's (TxDOT) current sign retroreflectivity maintenance practices, assessed their effectiveness, and recommended statewide sign retroreflectivity maintenance practices that could be easily and effectively implemented to ensure that TxDOT would be in compliance with the new Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) language related to minimum sign retroreflectivity."

Evaluation, presentation and repair of microbial acid-produced attack of concrete

Description: This report evaluates the severity of the deterioration in bridges to determine if microbial induced deterioration (MID) is a significant contributor by visual inspection and a number of tests on twelve selected columns. This report also evaluates the effectiveness of suggested test procedures on identifying microbial attack on concrete and the integrity of deteriorated concrete due to the attack.
