[Letter from Cassandra Broadus to Esther Livingston, January 7, 1991]

Description: Photocopy of a letter from Cassandra Broadus, to Esther Livingston, teacher at T.D. Marshall Elementary School. Broadus has gifted Livingston overhead transparencies to be used in Livingston's transportation unit curriculum. The transparencies include, Winslow Homer's Breezing Up (A Fair Wind) and other similar subjects for the elementary school children. Broadus ends the letter by suggesting a class visitation to correlate a lesson plan for the children in arts and language.

Explaining that the preservation of the visual arts program remains a top priority for DISD despite the funding setbacks they are receiving. Woolery writes that he looks forward to the participation and continued support in North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts partnership. The materials that NTIEVA sent has provided good insight to what is available and what can be achieved.

Broadus has given Sears lesson plans from Kay Alexander's Learning to Look and Create: The SPECTRA Series. Broadus writes that the art curriculum offers numerous ideas for correlating activities with concepts and addresses interdisciplinary curriculum ideas, highlighting some important introductory lesson plans that Broadus believes will be useful for Sears. [Letter from Bill McCarter to Raymond Nasher, May 9 1990]

Description: Photocopy of a letter from Bill McCarter, co-director of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Raymond Nasher, The Nasher Company. Mentioning a meeting, that Nasher chaired on, which energized the entire faculty and how disappointed McCarter is, because of scheduling conflicts, that Nasher will be unable to participate in the leadership retreat scheduled for June 1. McCarter also mentions literature that he forwarded to Nasher and hopes the he understands the enthusiasm for the concepts behind the NTIEVA's projects. McCarter then mentions that Dallas I.S.D. was unable to continue as a consortium district because of finalized details, yet McCarter hopes to reactivate Dallas after meeting with Howard Dunn and conversing with Janice Wiggins. McCarter ends the letter expressing concern about funding for the Institute. Copied on the letter is Rick Brettell.

[Letter from Jack Davis and Bill McCarter to Chad Woolery, March 3, 1993]

Description: Photocopy of a letter from Jack Davis and Bill McCarter, co-directors of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Chad Woolery, Deputy Superintendent for Dallas ISD. In regards of Janice Wiggins, Visual Arts Special, Dallas Public Schools and her contract with North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, hoping that she could be under an extended contract through June 14 - 25, 1993 to finish work she has started with three of her art specialists in planning the 1993 Dallas Institute. The Dallas Institute is a complex staff development experience for classroom teachers and art specialists in the district. Included in the letter is a detailed list of Wiggin's responsibility and her expected goals. At the end of the letter Davis and McCarter are excited to consider an interactive television connection with Dallas schools on June 21, 1993 and that Dr. Wilson, cross site evaluator for the Getty Center will be observing the distance learning project.

[Letter from Jack Davis and Bill McCarter, to Linus Wright, June 26, 1987]

Description: Photocopy of a letter from Jack Davis and Bill McCarter, co-directors of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Linus Wright, Superintendent of Dallas ISD. Davis and McCarter regret that Wright was unable to join them for the executive briefing on the North Texas Regional Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, "North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts" (NTIEVA), Wednesday, June 19. Following the briefing was an all-day workshop, Friday, June 21 which was attended by staff representatives from each consortium in the Institute, to discuss grant proposals which with offer opportunities for staff development and curriculum implementation in the visual arts. Enclosed at the end of the letter to Wright is information the functional committees and their list of responsibilities, for the upcoming Matching Funds Advisory Committee and Wright's assistance in its regard. [Letter from Jack Davis and Bill McCarter to Chad Woolery, April 29, 1993]

Description: Photocopy of a letter from Jack Davis and Bill McCarter, co-directors of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Char Woolery, Acting Superintendent for Dallas ISD. Davis and McCarter start the letter by congratulating Woolery on his new position as Acting Superintendent, giving him well wishes for the extremely important position. However, Davis and McCarter continue stating they are not thrilled with the principals participation in activities during the Summer Institutes. Stating that the leadership within the individual schools need an understanding of discipline-based art education and that they are planning a special day for administrators to construct the curriculum before any implementation can take place. Davis and McCarter have checked every district calendar in their consortium and determined that the administrator day would happen on June 8th, 1993, however, they regret to inform Woolery that Dallas principals will not be able to participate due to June 8th not being workable for them. Davis and McCarter then propose that they'd have another opportunity for the administrators specially for DISD in the fall. The letter ends with the promise of sending an invitation to the administrators of DISD at a later date.

Description: Photocopy of a letter from Bill Cormack, Director of Fine Arts for Dallas Public Schools to Bill McCarter, co-director of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts. In regards to McCarter's letter of January 16. Cormack writes that they appreciates McCarter's offer to match funds for training the teachers at the DMA, however the money from the district has not been budgeted for that purpose so Cormack declines the invitation.

[Letter from Bill McCarter and Nancy Cason to Janice Wiggins, May 10, 1991]

Description: Photocopy of a letter from Bill McCarter and Nancy Cason, North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Janice Wiggins, Art Supervisor of Dallas ISD. Thanking Wiggins for her time working with NTIEVA, and meeting with Dr. Brooks-Ray and Howard Dunn to discuss interest in the program for staff development. The Institute and the district face uncertain economic conditions but McCarter and Cason believe if they could stretch their first year budget they could pay a team member (kindergarten and first grade teacher, art specialist and principal) a stipend of $50 a day to attend the three-week institute during the summer. However, since Dallas was not written into the original implementation grant they will have to review it with the Getty Center and cannot promise continued support past the year.

Description: Photocopy of a letter from Bill McCarter and Nancy Cason, North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Janice Wiggins, Dallas ISD. Iin regards of Dallas' participation in the North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts. McCarter and Cason write that after reviewing their budget they have found that they will be able to fund one team from DISD at 100% for the first year at the Institute, yet after one year they are unsure that they'll be able to get more funding from the Getty Center to allow Dallas as a consortium. Included at the end of the letter is a mock-up of what Dallas will be entitled to during their Summer institute Services.

Description: Photocopy of a letter from Bill McCarter and Nancy Cason, North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Chad Woolery, Deputy Superintendent of Dallas ISD. Appreciating the concern shown by the DISD's administration and the school board about preserving the visual arts program in Dallas Public Schools. McCarter and Cason write that Dallas is one of six consortium districts participating in the North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, NTIEVA, program. NTIEVA provides intensive summer institute training in discipline-based art education for elementary principals, art specialists, classroom teachers, and museum educators, while also assisting the implementation of integrative art programs during the school year. Public schools such as, T.D. Marshall, Colonial Learning Center, Lida Hooe, Maple Lawn and Sidney Lanier have sent teams to the summer institute program, along with other schools in attendance as well. McCarter and Cason finish the letter with how successful their institute is, writing that they've served a total of twenty elementary schools, impacting 500 teachers and 12,500 students, and that they're excited about their partnership with Dallas.

[Letter from Bill McCarter to Bill Cormack, Janice Wiggins and Chris Thomason, July 28, 1995]

Description: Photocopy of a summary letter from Bill McCarter, co-director of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Bill Cormack, Janice Wiggins and Chris Thomason. Regarding a meeting that fell on June 22, 1995, notably, the participation of Dallas ISD in future activities with the Institute. McCarter starts the letter with the proposal of a new time frame for the Institute activities, and mentions how the meeting brought up the ideas of having all-day Saturday sessions. However, McCarter expresses his concern that some teachers from the Dallas ISD might be unable to attend all-day Saturday sessions, and how important it is that they will attend all the meetings because of how complex the Institute is. Included in the letter is an observation from Chad Woolery, stating that due to budget and time that Dallas would be unable to continue participation with NTIEVA as a consortium member. McCarter addresses that they have had issues with Dallas since they began to participate.
