At the Old Cabin Door

Description: Colored postcard depicting an old rustic cabin with two men and a woman sitting outside of the front door. There are barrels and a well in the foreground. Handwritten on the front, "Dear Little Rosa L. I am so lonely, with out and will be sad after work today. Hurry and come back. Your Auntie Rosa." It is addressed to Miss Rosa Louise Dill, 206 E. 5th Street, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. It is postmarked Monett & Paris R.P.O. on April 16, 1907.

Bootleggers

Description: Photograph of bootleggers, most likely during prohibition. The Mexicans regularly smuggled sotol, a drink similar to tequila, across the border near the Big Bend area of West Texas. These men have a barrel and some bottles of alcohol on the ground next to them.

Barrel for Outhouses.

Description: Patent for a new and improved barrel. This design consists in "[t]he combination, with the barrel-head having the opening, of the cover adapted to close said opening, the bolt extending through said cover and into the barrel, the clamping bar longer than the width of said opening in the barrel-head, said bar being centrally pivoted by a rivet to the lower end of said bolt, and a nut screwed upon the upper end of said bolt for clamping said cover in position" (lines 16-25).

Barrel Truck.

Description: Patent for a new and improved barrel cart. This design "is to provide an improved barrel rack or truck which can be conveniently and easily loaded and transported from place to place; to provide means for assisting in loading the barrel or receptacle on the truck and for retaining the same on the truck against danger of accidental displacement while the truck and its contents are being moved or transported, and to provide an improved truck which shall be very simple, strong, and durable in construction, thoroughly effective in operation, and cheap and inexpensive of manufacture" (lines 14-26).

Barrel Cover.

Description: Patent for a new and improved cover for barrels. This design calls for downward-extending flanges with wings along the perimeter of the cover. These flanges hold the cover in place over the barrel opening, but they also allow for the cover to rest at an angle on the upper rim of the barrel so that one has access to the contents of the barrel without the cover touching the ground.

Description: Patent for a new and improved device for extracting liquids from sealed containers. This design utilizes a bellows apparatus, and "by simply compressing [it] air is forced into the space in the barrel or vessel above the liquid, when the pressure of this air will exhaust the liquid through the faucet at the bottom under pressure" (lines 65-70).
