Electric Arc Lamp.

Description: Patent for a new and improved electric-arc lamp. This design consists in "the combination of a single horseshoe electro-magnet in the circuit of a main line, connected on the positive side to a binding-post having shunt material as a bushing around it, an armature hinged at its center and free to vibrate throughout its length with a carbon-rod holder, which it is adapted to clutch at the hinged part, said magnet acting upon the ends of the armature only, and an adjustable trip and limiting-stops, and means permitting both to be readily adjusted upon the outside of the casing to regulate the lamp" (lines 46-58).

Description: Patent for a new and improved electric-arc lamp. This design is "for utilizing a part of the magnetic field of the electro-magnet to act as a retarding medium or a brake to the carbon-holder, which consists of a system of gear-wheels provided with a ratchet and pawl . . . actuated from rack-teeth cut in the side of the upper-carbon rod, on the last spindle of which is adjustably secured a disk of soft iron or other magnetic material, so located as to be within the influence of the magnetic field of one end of the electro-magnet" (lines 36-47).

Description: Patent for a new and improved lantern. This design "has relation to that class of lamp in which the reflector is secured to the lamp, having an aperture in its upper portion for the passage of the chimney of the lamp, and in which the reflector may be adjusted to throw the light from the lamp in different directions without moving the lamp; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same" (lines 23-31).

Description: Patent for a new and improved lamp shelf for pianos. This design "consists in an arm pivoted to the back of a music-rack and carrying a lamp-shelf, the arm being arranged to swing outward into a horizontal position, and the shelf being connected with the end of the arm by a pivotal connection, which permits of turning it outward and downward into a horizontal position in front of the plane of the music-rack" (lines 22-30).

Lamp Chimney Cap.

Description: Patent for a new and improved cap for oil lamps. A lamp "equipped with [this] improvement may therefore be carried outdoors without danger of being put out or exploding on account of rain or wind. The protector, being made of metal, also serves by radiation to equalize the heat of the chimney and prevent it from cracking" (lines 48-54). Further, it is simpler and more durable than previous lamp-chimney caps.

Description: Patent for a new and improved reflector for oil lamps. Description: Patent for a new and improved attachment for oil-lamp chimneys. This design is for a metal piece to be inserted into the top of the glass chimney, resting along the chimney's brim. The piece has an elbow that connects the inserted part to an angled and tapered part, which, when appropriately turned, prevents the wind from extinguishing the lamp's flame.

Description: Patent for a new and improved lamp-holder. This design relates to "brackets for supporting lamps and other like articles; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character which shall be adjustable in various directions and extensible" (lines 15-19). It consists "of a casting having a rectangular portion provided with holes and from which extend parallel horizontal ears, the horizontal tubular arm formed at its inner end with enlargement arranged between the ears, the vertical pin passed through holes in said ears and a coincident hole in said enlargement intersecting the bore of the arm" (lines 18-26).
