[City of Denton fireman putting out fire on a truck]

Description: Photograph of a Denton fireman using a hose to put out a fire on what is believed to be a drilling truck for Denton Municipal Electric on the side of a road in Denton, Texas. Another man stands just out of frame on the left. A building and trees can be seen in the distance behind him. In the early 1980s the fire service started transitioning their bunker gear to add more protection. Until then the rubber boots came up above the knees and were referred to as "three-quarter boots" for covering 3/4 of the leg. The bunker coat was long and came down close to the knees to provide some overlap. To store and step into the boots, the person kept the upper part folded halfway down like in the picture; or more often folded in thirds so the top could more easily be pulled back when needed. Adding bunker pants to the ensemble gave more protection to the legs and also allowed the user to shorten the bunker coats to allow for a little more flexibility. The yellow bunker coat was made out of Nomex fire resistant fabric. Prior to that the coats were made out of black cotton/canvas type material. The yellow fire helmet would indicate that the person was either a firefighter or Driver rank. [attributed to Brian Glenn, Battalion Chief - EMS, City of Denton]
