Application guide and specifications for geotextiles in roadway applications

Description: Abstract: "Geotextiles, one among the different geosynthetic products, can be used for a number of functions or applications in pavement design. The benefits of using geotextiles in pavements and other transportation applications have triggered a proliferation of products. While this abundance of new products has led to reduction in costs, it has also made it difficult for TxDOT personnel to choose appropriate products based on their engineering properties. Consequently, this report provides the basis for (i) guidelines for proper use and selection of geotextiles in pavements, (ii) material specifications for geotextiles in pavement applications, and (iii) draft construction specifications."

Improving stop line detection using video imaging detectors

Description: "The Texas Department of Transportation and other state departments of transportation as well as cities nationwide are using video detection successfully at signalized intersections. However, operational issues with video imaging vehicle detection systems (VIVDS) products occur at some locations. The resulting issues vary but have included: camera contrast loss resulting in max-recall operation, failure to detect vehicles leading to excessive delay and red-light violations, and degraded detection accuracy during nighttime hours. This research resulted in the development of a formalized VIVDS test protocol and a set of performance measures that agencies can incorporate in future purchase orders and use to uniformly evaluate VIVDS products. It also resulted in the development of a VIVDS video library and conceptual plans for a field laboratory for future projects to deploy a range of VIVDS products at an operational signalized intersection. Researchers evaluated alternative VIVDS stop line detection designs and developed methods for enhancing the operation of VIVDS through adjustments in controller settings for day versus night versus transition periods, zone placement, and camera placement."

Field and laboratory investigations for Full Depth Reclamation projects

Description: Full-depth reclamation (FDR) offers a timely, cost-effective solution to restore a pavement's condition. However, FDR represents only one technique in the engineer's toolkit available for addressing deteriorating pavement conditions. The purpose of this project is to provide guidance on determining whether a pavement is a candidate for FDR and, if so, what design, construction, and inspection processes will maximize the performance of the completed reclamation. This report presents initial recommendations for selecting a candidate FDR project and developing design options (including field sampling and lab design protocols). Along with a literature review, these recommendations are illustrated by application on several projects in the Texas Department of Transportation's Austin and Dallas Districts.

Development of a precast bridge deck overhang system

Description: This research investigated the overhang and shear capacity of a precast overhang system for potential use during the construction of bridges with precast overhang panels. The research was performed in three phases: the Phase 1 research including work specifically for the Rock Creek Bridge in Parker County, Texas; the Phase 2 research for general precast overhang panels, and; the Phase 3 research investigating the shear capacity. Grout material characteristics were also assessed for possible use in the haunch; constructability issues were also addressed.

Evaluating existing culverts for load capacity allowing for soil structure interaction

Description: This study explores culvert load rating practices and procedures as applied to the Texas Department of Transportation's (TxDOT's) archive of 1477 culvert designs and their inventory of more than 13,000 in-service reinforced concrete box culverts. The problem is that when older culverts are load-rated based on current AASHTO policy, many competent, serviceable culverts are shown to be deficient, requiring load posting, retrofit or replacement. A disconnect exists between culvert structural analysis practices and actual culvert performance. To address this challenge, the research focused on development of a clear, repeatable and reliable procedure for TxDOT engineers and their consultants to use for load rating culverts in the TxDOT roadway system. Articulated in TxDOT's Culvert Rating Guide, the new load rating procedure uses three increasingly-sophisticated analysis approaches, ranging from a direct stiffness frame model to a production-oriented finite element model which accounts for soil-structure interaction. Validation of the Culvert Rating Guide involved three major tasks. First, the researchers load-rated a statistically representative sample of 100 of TxDOT's culvert designs. Second, a parametric study was performed to evaluate six independent variables associated with culvert load rating. Third, instrumented load tests on three in-service culverts were conducted to compare measured demands with predicted values. This work showed that the analytical methods in the Culvert Rating Guide produce conservative load ratings yet still allow for reduction in excess over-conservatism in the load rating process.

Export growth, energy costs, and sustainable supply chains

Description: "The report examines sustainable supply chains in North America and the role played by rail inter-modal operations in lowering ten-mile fuel and emission costs. It examines whether current systems favor imports over exports - a current complaint from some shippers - and whether the development of inland inter-modal ports offers a solution to moving future freight into and out of large metropolitan areas."

Portable Emission Measurement System-Based Approach to Developing and Evaluating Driving Cycles for Air Quality Assessment

Description: "The first objective is to develop driving cycles for classified roads incorporating both a vehicle's driving activities and its emission characteristics, using the data collected by Portable Emission Measurement System (PEMS), which was neither available nor has ever been used in developing driving cycles. A comprehensive database is established for the collected data and a sophisticated computer program is developed to generate the specific driving cycles. The second objective is to develop an evaluation approach of driving cycles in which Vehicle Specific Power (VSP), a parameter that can readily connect the driving modes with emissions, is used to evaluate how well the driving cycles can represent the driving and emission characteristics on real roads."
