[Polish St. Nicholas Cake]

Description: Photograph of St. Mikolaj (St. Nicholas) cake, made by a Polish nun of the Seraphic Order in San Antonio, in the Polish Christmas display at the Texas Folklife Festival. The cake is molded to form St. Nicholas sitting in a sleigh. The cake looks to be covered in chocolate icing, with white icing for decoration and detail. In front of the cake is a small sign written in Polish. Behind the cake a sign reading, "Polish Festival Flags" is displayed on a container of small flags.

[Entrance to Polish Area]

[Polish Children Dancing Around the Maypole]

Description: Photograph of Polish children dancing around the maypole at the Texas Folklife Festival. The Maypole is erected outdoors in a grassy clearing. It is decorated with leafy garland spiraling up to the top where red, white and blue flowers are displayed. Colored ribbons stream from the top of the pole down to the hands of the children running clockwise around the pole. All of the children are girls, wearing white knee-high socks and white dresses with horizontal colored stripes near the hem. Over their dresses they are wearing red, black or blue vests embroidered with gold or silver decoration. Flowers or ribbons adorn each of their heads. In the background, a few spectators are visible, as are pennant flags and other festival booths.
