Description: Patent for a new and improved wrench. This design consists in "a wrench-head having a handle and a longitudinal slot through the wrench-head, a slidable bar having a jaw moving in said slot, a rack upon said bar, a worm-wheel in the wrench-head, meshing with the rack, and a jaw upon the wrench-head, jointly with a screw-driver inserted in the end of the slidable bar, said wrench-head having a plane outer surrounding surface in proximity to the longitudinal slot" (lines 1-10).

Description: Patent for a new and improved coupling for railroad cars. This design consists in "the combination of the draw-heads provided with forwardly-projecting portions having curved faces and notches in the rear thereof, bails pivoted centrally on vertical pins passing through the center of the draw-heads, springs exerting a rearward pressure on the rear ends of the bails, and chains secured to the forward ends of the bails to move them in opposition to the pressure of their springs" (lines 78-87).

This design "consists in a shaft journaled at its lower end in the ordinary draw-bar and at its upper end in a bracket . . . and in the combination therewith of a brace . . . adapted to support the lower end of said shaft, a hook placed between the brace and the draw-bar, and a spring surrounding the shaft and arranged to hold the shaft and hook normally . . . It also further consists in . . . the hook, . . . a spring-actuated uncoupling-rod extending through a bracket . . . and a retaining-latch. . . adapted to hold the said rod in a retracted position" (lines 22-37).

Description: Patent for a new and improved coupling for railroad cars. This design is "for automatically coupling cars of various heights, and also to provide devices for uncoupling the cars without the necessity of going between them. [The] invention consists in a spring-pressed hook attached to or formed upon a rock-shaft extending to the top of the car, and provided with a hand-wheel, by which it may be turned. It also consists in the combination, with the hook, of a rod connected thereto and extending to the side of the car, for uncoupling the car from the ground" (lines 16-27).

Gate.

Description: Patent for an improved farm gate that pivots in its center and can be swung in either direction. It is operated by a pull chord and levers. The pull chords are set on posts on either side of the gate, each side having two chords in order to open the gate in either direction. The posts also act as a brace to stop the gate from swinging further.
