[Letter from F.A. Hernandez to Frank M. Pinedo - 1955-02-03]

Description: Letter from F.A. Hernandez, President of League of United Latin American Citizens Council Number 132, to Frank M. Pinedo, asking Pinedo to please "absolve Council No. 132 publicly of any connotation of guilt" in relation to a crime committed by LULAC Council No. 8. According to the letter, LULAC Council 8 Lodge was raided by the Texas Liquor Board, which found the operation of an open saloon at the LULAC lodge. This resulted in a "flow of bad publicity" as well as being "subjected to considerable embarrassment and criticism." Hernandez calls on Pinedo to take swift and "stern corrective measures" to resolve the matter of Council No. 8 to bring order and stability back to other LULAC councils as well as Council No. 132. "We cannot sacrifice our past accomplishments and future goals, because a few deviate from the only known course leading toward our Aims and Purposes."

Description: Letter from Raoul Cortez, LULAC President General, to officers and members of LULAC Councils, dated February 10, 1949. The letter begins with a request to disregard an earlier correspondence dated January 5, 1949, which was written in response to issues raised at a Regional Convention in Houston, Texas. The President General is asking members to approve reimbursement of expenses incurred by LULAC officers during a trip to Washington, D.C. to meet with executives and legislators regarding civil rights and segregation issues. The second proposal concerned assessment of a fifty cent per member donation towards salaries for a professional organizer, a full-time Secretary General, and a paid Legal Advisor.

[Letter from A.D. Covin to George Carmack - 1962-02-24]

Description: Copy of a letter to George Carmack from A.D. Covin in response to an editorial in the Houston Press about a statement made by Robert Kennedy about Texas and its annexation. Covin claims that Kennedy's comments were critical of the expansionist policies of the United States, and not the annexation of Texas. Covin claims that the article is overlooking some historical facts (on which Kennedy's comments are based), namely that the United States instigated the Mexican War and forced Mexico to cede Texas to the United States in pursuit of Manifest Destiny.
