Description: Patent for a new and improved pier. This design "is to provide a new and improved pier which is simple and durable in construction, possesses great stability and strength, is readily sunk in the water and fastened in place, arranged to be built up to any desired height, and designed so as to cut the water in order to reduce the power of the current to a minimum. The invention consists of a series of rods formed at their lower ends with augers and adapted to pass through ears of an exterior shell forming the wall or casing of the pier" (lines 9-20).

Locomotive Headlight.

Description: Patent for a new and improved train headlight. This design "has for its object to improve locomotive head-lights by so constructing the reservoir and burner and mounting the same that they may be easily removed from and connected with the reflector without moving the latter; and it consists of a reservoir for the head-light having certain features of novelty and in various improvements in the apparatus as a whole" (lines 11-19).

Vine Cutter.

Description: Patent for a new and improved vine-cutter. This design "is to provide a suitable device . . . whereby a sweet-potato vine may be severed from the main stalk on each side of a ridge, the parts of the same being of simple and effective construction and operation" (lines 12-17). It consists in "a post or support, divergent elongated horizontally-arranged cutters secured to the opposite sides thereof and having their lower rear sides formed into cutting-edges of concave form, said cutters being deflected downward at a slight angle of inclination" (lines 66-72).

Description: Patent for improvements to typewriting machines with the aim of providing "a machine of simple and durable construction, capable of use for the ordinary purposes to which type-writers are applied, but especially adapted and designed for typewriting upon blank books, thereby facilitating the making of official records and producing records that are more legible and compact than it is possible to obtain by handwriting" (lines 11-18).

Description: Patent for a new and improved motor. This design "is to produce a simple, convenient, and efficient foot-power having a single pedal accessible from each side of the motor or a double pedal accessible at the end to an operator facing the machine" (lines 14-19). It consists "of a horizontal rock-shaft extending lengthwise of the machine, a horizontal connecting-piece running diagonally of and rigidly secured to said shaft, a seat for the operator, a pedal rigidly secured to said rock-shaft, said pedal serving as a single or double pedal and so arranged that the operator shall face the device" (lines 94-101).

Box Fastener.

Description: Patent for a new and improved box-fastener. This design "is an improvement in cover-fasteners; and it has for its objects to produce a cover-fastener which will securely fasten the cover to a box, which will be simple, cheap, and effective" (lines 8-12). It consists in "the base-plate provided with a perforation adapted for the reception of a bolt, a movable plate mounted on the base-plate and having a perforation and a slot connected with the same and having its movement limited by guides and provided with an outwardly-turned lug, a bolt provided with a neck, and a gravity locking-pin" (lines 90-98).
