[Return of Capt. Hamilton K. Redway, January 1865]

Description: Return of Capt. Hamilton K. Redway which details the present and absent men of Company "F" First Veteran regiment of the New York Cavalry for the month of January in the year of 1865. The return notes enlisted men on "extra or daily duty," commissioned officers present or absent, and any alterations made to the company for this particular month. This document was created while Redway was stationed at Kelley's Creek in West Virginia.

Artesian Well Borer.

Description: Patent for a new and improved artesian-well borer. This design "will be actuated by the weight of the connecting-rods and sink-wells in rock, gravel, earth, or sand without the use of water" (lines 13-16). It consists "[i]n an earth or rock auger, the combination, with a tube and a shank reciprocating in said tube and adapted to operate the auger, of dogs adapted to be projected through the tube by the reciprocation of the shank to engage the well-casing and hold the said tube from rotary movement" (lines 62-68).

Sand-Screen for Wells.

Description: Patent for a sand-screen for wells "to provide a simple and efficient device adapted for use on ordinary well-tubing, the same being capable of construction and repair at small cost, being readily attachable to and removable from the tubing, and having means for effectually excluding sand from the inlet end of the tubing, while permitting the free inflow of water therethrough" (lines 9-17).
