[Abraham González Casavantes with Madero]

Description: Photograph of Abraham González Casavantes with Francisco Madero. Abraham González was one of the main leaders of the Maderista Junta Revolucionaria Mexicana, which was a movement opposing the re-election of then-dictator Porfirio Diaz in 1910. Abraham González was murdered on March 7, 1913 in Bachimba Canyon on the orders from Victoriano Huerta. The first and second gentlemen in the photograph are not identified. The remaining men are Abraham González, Francisco Madero, and Pascual Orozco.

Description: Photograph taken from behind eight Mexican Insurrectos who are crouched on a hill with their weapons pointed outward at the desert. A ninth man is partially visible in the left side of the image, along with supplies on the ground next to him. Description: Photograph of a group of Anglo revolutionaries and a few Mexican revolutionaries. The man kneeling down on the right side of the photo appears to be cooking. The Mexican Revolution prompted foreign volunteers to participate in the revolution for a variety of reasons. Many volunteers were called to action in the name of adventure, while others reported to duty as mercenaries. Dead Insurrectos

Description: Photograph of a group of dead insurrectos. There are at least nineteen corpses visible in the photograph. The bodies seen in this photograph have been strategically placed together in preparation to burn the bodies all at once or to bury the bodies in one mass grave.

[Dead Villista]

Description: Photograph of a dead Villista. The Villista is wearing the traditional Mexican peasant garb. The traditional peasant outfit includes the white cotton trousers with the white cotton pullover shirt, usually worn untucked. Accessories for men usually included simple sandals or boots, a tall pointed straw woven sombrero, and a simple cloth belt. The soldier’s sandals have been taken away from dead man.

[Derailed N de M Locomotive]

Description: Photograph of a derailed N de M locomotive train. The engine number is 862. Insurrectos have surrounded what is left of this train and appear to be salvaging whatever supplies that they can find useful. The N de M is officially known as Ferrocarriles Nacionales de México. The N de M absorbed the Mexican Central Railroad in 1909.

[Derailed Supply Train]

Description: Photograph of a derailed supply train. The accompanying information on the back of this photograph states that this train was a Mexican Federal train loaded with ammunition and dynamite. It was headed toward awaiting Mexican Federal troops. Four insurrectos can also be seen near the car.

[Francisco I. Madero]

Description: Photograph of Francisco Ignacio Madero Gonzalez. Sitting next to Madero, wearing a black coat, is Federico Garza. Across from Madero and Garza is "Soldier of Fortune" Guiseppi Garibaldi. Francisco Madero served as Presidente of Mexico from 1911 to 1913. Madero was betrayed by General Victoriano Huerta and was executed on February 22, 1913. This photograph was taken at Madero's camp in Ciuadad Juarez, just across the river from where Smeltertown would have been located.

[Francisco "Pancho" Villa]

Description: Photograph of Pancho Villa. This is a rare photograph of Francisco Villa. General Villa is the man who is standing on top of the first railroad boxcar. The photograph is rare because Villa appears to be smiling. The men who are riding on top of these railroad boxcars are Villista revolutionists. Villa’s men and supporters became known as Villistas. [Gathering the Dead]

Description: Photograph of dead revolutionaries stacked on top of one another on a wagon. A body that has yet to be picked up is on the ground to the right of the wagon. All of the deceased have had their shoes removed. Other revolutionaries stand solemnly.

[General Agustin Estrada]

Description: Photograph of the rebel general, Agustin Estrada. Estrada was a general in Pancho Villa's rebel army, the Division del Norte (the Division of the North). Estrada was appointed garrison commander in 1912. He participated in the Battle of Celaya, April 6-15, 1915, fighting under Villa against Alvaro Obregon. Villa's cavalry suffered large losses in the battle, General Agustin Estrada was one of the casualties; he was killed leading his cavalry brigade against Obregon's forces.

Some of the men in this photograph were the personal bodyguards to General Campa. General Campa and General Salazar were good friends with Pascual Orozco and fought against the Constitutional Army. [General Maximo Castillo]

Description: Photograph of General Maximo Castillo. The other intellectual general was Jose Isabel Robles. Castillo would eventually break off from Villa and would operate as a separate fighting force. After the break from Villa, Villa had men sent after him to deal with him. Castillo once captured Villa's wife, Luz Corral. Castillo's specialty was in robbing and taking over trains in which Americans were traveling on. There is a blurred train trestle in the background.
