Description: Insurance certificate purchased by Mrs. H.K. Redway from the Lorillard Fire Insurance Company, which was located on 104 Broadway, in the city of New York. The certificate insures the Redway's home for $900.00, clothing and provisions for $100.00, and the barn for $200.00. The total of the insured items and property was $1200.00, an amount which would be paid to the Redways in case of fire.

[Letter from John Patterson Osterhout to Sarah Osterhout, May 20, 1877]

Description: Letter from John Patterson Osterhout to his mother, Sarah Osterhout. He wrote his mother to let her know how his family was doing. He told her he was sorry to hear that someone was sick and gave his recommendation to have the man inhale smoke to help him. He then went on to write about his beliefs that inhaling smoke was good for the lungs and that he learned this from inhaling smoke from a campfire.

Description: Patent for a fire escape "with a cord or rope of suitable length which has at one end a weight to serve as a projectile to facilitate throwing the cord or rope to a person at any part of the burning building, after which the fire-escape or other device necessary for the purpose may be conveniently elevated to the window or other portion of the building where most needed for the rescue of person or property" (lines 14-22). Description: Patent for an improved, simple, and durable fire extinguisher that can be used quickly conveniently, and effectively to extinguish a fire in a cotton gin. The extinguisher is built into the gin. The gin has a hole in its top, a lint chute on one side, a valve that closes the hole, a valve that closes the lint chute, a connection between the valves, and a rope that connects the valves to a guide.

Description: Patent for a fire-extinguishing apparatus designed for use in gin-mills, saw-mills, factories, and other buildings. The operator can quickly turn on a stream of water and extinguish the flames. The apparatus is a valved supply-pipe connected to a boiler, branch pipes extend from the supply-pipe, and discharge nozzles are connected and are flexible.
