FIRE
From B-1
The heaviest damage appeared
to have occurred in Nelson's office
in the back of the store, where he
kept personal files from his last
eight years of work with the Dallas
Gay Alliance. Nelson said files on
the alliance's efforts to work with
the Dallas Police Department and
Dallas Independent School District
may have been destroyed.
"A lot of this is irreplaceable,"
Nelson said. "It's going to be rough
to duplicate."
Even before he learned of the
fire investigator's report, Nelson
declined to say whether he
thought someone might have set
the fire to protest his beliefs.
"That's not really been the histo-
ry of people's reactions to the gay
rights movement in Dallas, and I
hope that's not the case here," he
said.
Nelson said a passer-by appar-
ently noticed smoke rising from
the store early Saturday and called
the fire department. He was noti-Area detailed

A fire that destroyed the head-
quarters of the Dallas Gay Alliance
and two neighboring Oak Lawn
businesses Thursday morning was
set in the alliance offices, fire offi-
cials said Friday.
"There was one fire, and it started
inside the Dallas Gay Alliance," said
Deputy Fire Chief Tom Oney, end-
ing speculation that separate fires
were started.
Officials said the fire, which
caused $750,000 in damages to the
complex, in the 3900 block of Cedar
Springs Road, might have been set
to cover evidence of burglaries at
the alliance offices and Union Jack
clothing store next door. The
Round-Up Saloon also was de-
stroyed, and three other businesses
were damaged.
Fire officials confirmed that paper
files and computer disks were taken
from the alliance offices but would
not speculate about a motive. Three
or four computers and a laser print-
er also are missing from the AIDS
Resource Center, a counseling and
service agency that was operated by
the alliance at the same location.
William Waybourn, president of
the alliance, said the missing files
contain correspondence about legal
issues, but "there is nothing in those
files that someone couldn't have
called and gotten from us. It's not
going to tell them anything new."
The alliance and AIDS Resource
Center were operating Friday in do-
nated office space in the 4000 block
of Cedar Springs Road.
The center has received about
$17,000 in cash donations - $10,000
of it in one check from a person
who requested anonymity - tempo-
rary office space, office furniture
and equipment, promises of medical
equipment donations and numerous
other items, said John Thomas, di-
rector of the center.
Thomas said the center, which
operated in rented space, has not re-
ceived an estimate of its losses.

uted to this report.___ -
