and Bill Corbin have compiled a list of all such notes known to
have been issued by local governments and private persons in
Texas. Although the writers admit the probability of having
missed some Texas scrip, an effort was made to contact all known
museums, collectors, and dealers in their search for information.
Eighty-eight counties, fourteen towns, and fifty-six individuals
or businesses definitely issued paper money in Texas. At least
eight towns had their notes printed outside the state; five of them
had the work done in New Orleans. The scrip varied in original
value from $.05 to $10o with the most common range being $.1o
to $o10. Present collectors' values on the historic currency vary
from $7.50 to $150 and more.
The compilers of this interesting volume have provided a
unique addition to the ever growing bibliography of Texas Civil
War items. It should be pointed out, however, that the study will
also serve well the county and local historians of Texas in future
efforts to chronicle the events of their area for the period 1861-
1865. Enlivening what otherwise might have been a rather mo-
notonous listing of scrip are 146 illustrations, many of them
appearing for the first time. The work would have been of even
greater value had an attempt been made to list the museums,
archives, collectors, and dealers possessing each note.
