Southwestern Historical Quarterly
Quarterly. We are aiming for our first noticeable change this
next July, 1967. Some changes have already occurred, but they
have been small and subtle, and only the unusually alert are
probably aware of them.
Along with change of format will occur occasional change of
editorial procedure. Particularly we plan to publish occasional
issues devoted to a theme or an area, with some articles being
commissioned for those particular issues. In the July, 1967,
Quarterly we plan to devote the whole number to one of the
chief phases of Southwestern life-that of the cattle industry.
Some articles are already in hand, and certain authors have prom-
ised to supply still others in time for the cattle issue.
Again, the possibilities for themes are endless. A few that
suggest themselves are the regions of Texas, the professions, the
arts, the industries, and the people.
Some of the pressure for space in "Texas Collection" should
be eased by founding the newsletter, Riding Line. Printing and
paper costs being what they are, Riding Line can handle much
of the transient Association news that should be shared, while
the more durable stuff of history that should be indexed for
posterity can continue to find its way into the "Texas Collec-
tion" department.
Already a Board of Editors consisting of Ralph Wooster, Beau-
mont; W. H. Timmons, El Paso; Stanley Siegel, Houston; Ernest
Wallace, Lubbock; and Andrew Forest Muir, Houston, has been
named. The idea here is to expedite handling manuscripts, so
that authors can get quick decisions. Also, since these men are
experts in different fields of history, the Quarterly should be able
to upgrade the quality of its offerings more than if the editor
tried to make decisions solely on the basis of his own competence.
In the area of book reviews the direction again is expansive.
Professor Robert Cotner of the University of Texas has been
named Book Review Editor. Already he has begun utilizing a
wider range of reviewers and of books to be reviewed. We agree
that books of historical content by Texas authors should at least
be noticed, since these authors contribute to the total cultural
and intellectual heritage of Texas. We also agree that an aggres-
sive solicitation of books with Texas content should be a key362
