Southwestern Historical Quarterly
to go by way of Memphis, and we had to go by way of New Orleans.
So I told them goodbye.
Wednesday, Oct. 31, i888.
When I got up this morning we were on our way to New
Orleans. We have just passed the town of Crowley. Perhaps it
got its name from the smart old monkey who lives in Central
Park in New York City whose name is also "Crowley." Every house
has its cistern, for there are no wells in this part of the country.
On our way to New Orleans Roscoe got out and got some sugar
cane. It is very nice. The country is very level. In Texas the
plains were devoid of water &8 here they are covered with water.
We saw a great many blackbirds. We arrived at Algiers, which
is right across from New Orleans, at 4 p. m. We were run on an
immense ferry boat and soon were on the New Orleans side.
After leaving New Orleans we went on out through endless swamps
teeming with snipe. At Lake Pontchartrain we saw the clubhouse
of the New Orleans Gun Club. The trestle work over the lake is
2o miles wide. We will be in Atlanta at 7:35 a. m. in the morning,
so I will close the diary with a few words that it has been the most
delightful time that I have ever spent
The End
