Accessions
New accessions of the Southwest Collection at Texas Tech University
include the papers, 1921-1976, of Marshall Formby, Plainview business-
man and attorney; the papers, 19 1-1966, of black physician J. A. Chat-
man of Lubbock; and the papers, 1922-1976, of Preston E. Harrison, su-
perintendent of the Big Spring State Hospital. The development of the
Pecos River Compact Commission is well documented in the papers, 1915-
1973, of J. C. Wilson, PRCC commissioner for Texas, and the papers,
I946-1975, of Emil C. Rassman, legal advisor to the commissioner. The
Wilson Papers also include materials related to Pecos Valley agriculture.
Microfilmed acquisitions include the minute books, 1883-1976, of the
Pitchfork Land and Cattle Company; the papers, 1884-1959, of John L.
McCarty, historian and former editor of the Amarillo Globe-News; the
scrapbooks, 1882-1962, of Mrs. C. C. Slaughter, wife of the cattle baron
and banker; the papers, 1942-1975, of J. T. "Happy" Shahan, who con-
structed Alamo Village near Brackettville; the papers, 1918-1927, of motion
picture star Lyle Talbert, pertaining to his career in tent shows; the diaries,
1909-1975, of E. L. Yeats, long-time Methodist minister; the papers, 1886-
1907, of W. E. Rayner, who played an important role in establishing the
city of Lubbock; and the papers, 1861-1969, of Doris Miller, and other
materials pertaining to the historic Rafter 3 Ranch near Coleman.
The Southwest Collection is continuing to microfilm the records of
chambers of commerce throughout West Texas, including Anson, Alpine,
Ballinger, Brady, Breckenridge, Brownwood, Cisco, Graham, Haskell,
Junction, Kerrville, Llano, Marfa, Mason, Menard, Odessa, Seymour,
Sweetwater, and Van Horn.
C. R. Smith, former student of UT-Austin and former chairman and
chief executive officer of American Airlines, has given thirty-six paintings
of the American West to his alma mater. Included are works that range
