Cover: "The Surrender of Santa Anna" by William H. Huddle. Cour-
tesy Texas Highways.
In 1886, when artist W. H. Huddle painted the most memorable event of
the battle of San Jacinto, he tried to make the picture as authentic as pos-
sible. His research took him to the scene of the event and to the location of
both Texas and Mexican documents. The completed painting contains some
thirty identifiable portraits of men believed to have been present at the sur-
render.
A gift from Mrs. Doris Lea Koontz made possible the reproduction and
printing of this Quarterly cover.
