Casa Calvo's letter made it clear that he did not realize that Trudeau,
stationed far from the Mississippi, could do nothing to prevent Choc-
taws from crossing, and his mention of presents was reminiscent of Ca-
rondelet. The cession of Louisiana to France six months later further
reduced Spanish ability to cope with the Choctaws. William Panton,
authority on southern Indian trade, summarized the situation in 18o0
by his statement that both Choctaws and Chickasaws were doing most
of their hunting west of the Mississippi.43
