408 Southwestern Historical Quarterly
In short, the 1887 Texas state census provides a mixture of revela-
tion and frustration, but in the balance it must be regarded as a highly
significant document, particularly to students of Texas ethnicity. No
doubt the volume is available in most university libraries and Texana
collections. It deserves to be taken down from its dusty shelf, read, and
used. Only in this manner will the century of obscurity that has ap-
parently been its curse be ended.
