Cabeza de Vaca's La relaczon, also known as Los Naufragios (Shipwrecks),
contains the first eyewitness account of Texas by a European. The work
includes comments on the land, climate, and Indians. Cabeza de Vaca
probably wrote this account of his years in Texas within two or three
years after his trek ended in 1536. It was published in 1542 in Zamora,
Spain, and in 1555 the second edition was printed with slight altera-
tions. La relacion is the starting point for any interpretation of Cabeza
de Vaca's route across Texas.
