Meetings
The 1988 annual meeting is only weeks away, so be sure to reserve
that time on your calendar. We will be getting together March 3-5 at
Austin's Hyatt Regency on Town Lake. As we reported in the last issue,
this meeting promises to be a special one indeed. Since 1988 is the
one hundredth anniversary of the births of Walter Prescott Webb and
J. Frank Dobie, their lives and careers in Texas will be a focus of the
meeting. Papers, speeches, and panels will let us fondly remember
these giants of Texas studies and will also show us sides of them that we
know less about.
The annual auction of Texana will be held in honor of Dr. Webb and
Mr. Dobie, and we are hoping to have a number of items related to
their lives and work. This year's auction will have a new feature. In ad-
dition to the usual spirited bidding at the regular auction, we will also
have a separate silent auction where you can write down a bid for books
and other items on display. Some competitive soul can then come along
and write down a higher bid right after yours. The silent auction items
will be on display for most of the meeting, so you won't have to make
the snap decisions of the regular auction.
As always, we look forward to getting together once again to ex-
change ideas, hear stimulating presentations, and catch up on the latest
books and news. Put a big red X across March 3-5, 1988, and join us in
Austin on those dates. Bring along some friends so they can enjoy the
annual meeting with us.
"Myths, History and the Evolution of the Black Vote in Houston,
1926-1986," a conference and workshop, will be hosted by Texas
Southern University and held on the campus of the said university Feb-
ruary 5-6, 1988. This project is made possible by a grant from the
Texas Committee for the Humanities, a state program of the National
Endowment for the Humanities. For further information contact Mer-
line Pitre, History Department, Texas Southern University, Houston

The Walter Prescott Webb Memorial Lectures held annually at the
University of Texas at Arlington will be on March 17 this year. The
topic for the 1988 Lectures is "Sunbelt Cities and Recent Urban Amer-
ica," and participants include Zane Miller, University of Cincinnati;
Carl Abbott, Portland State University; Roger Lotchin, University of370
