chase Prize, Ninth Annual Dallas Allied Arts Exhibition, 1938.
Born and raised on a Texas cotton farm, Merritt Mauzey (1898-1973)
had a powerful feel for life on the land. This painting of neighboring
farmers, one plowing with mules, the other with a tractor, captures the
changes taking place in rural Texas in the early twentieth century, the
focus of Walter L. Buenger's article beginning on page 519 of this issue.
Mauzey was a member of the Dallas Nine, a group of artists who painted
many scenes of Texas life in this era.
