In a long and distinguished career, Thomas Hart Benton created many
powerful images of ordinary people and situations often ignored by oth-
er artists. The courtship of an African American couple, the subject of
this striking painting, is also the topic of one article in this issue, which
focuses on women in Texas and the Southwest.
