Another reprint dealing with African American and Indian history is
Texas Tech University's paperback reissue of Kevin Mulroy's fine study en-
titled Freedom on the Border: The Seminole Maroons in Florida, the Indian Terri-
tory, Coahuila, and Texas ($19.95, x+246 pages). Originally published in
1993, the study tells the story of black runaways who braved escape in the
eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to join in an unprecedented al-
liance with the Seminole Indians in Florida, their removal to Indian Ter-
ritory, their role in the Texas Indian wars, and their long quest for liberty
that played out on both sides of the Rio Grande. Mulroy is director of re-
search collections and chair of research services in the Information Ser-
vices Division at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
Austin writer John Taliaferro's biography of western artist Charles M.
Russell has been issued in paperback by the University of Oklahoma
Press. Historian Brian Dippie, who has written perhaps more on Russell
than anyone else, calls Taliaferro's book "unquestionably, the best biogra-
phy of Russell ever published." Charles M. Russell: The Life and Legend of
America's Cowboy Artist ($19.95, 336 pages) tells in comprehensive detail
the story of the artist who produced some 4,000 paintings, watercolors,
drawings, and sculpltures and who is well represented in Texas collections
such as the Amon Carter Museum and the Sid Richardson Collection in
Fort Worth.
