LIBRARY’S
NEW BOOKS
By Margaret Wring
I am an avid reader of
Shelia Thylor Well’s column in
the Life Section of the Fort
Worth Star Tblegram, so I read
the letter in her column on
Sunday, February 26, sent in
by Dawson Hicks.
However, Dawson was listed
as living in Fort Worth. I
thought “well, there’s two 10
year olds named Dawson*. I
have found out the address
was wrong, and indeed the
letter was from Dawson, son of
John and Sally Hicks.
After the mother of Newt
Gingrich made her famous
faux pas about Hilliary Clin-
ton, Shelia invited her readers
to send her letters about how
they had been embarrassed by
their mothers.
Dawson had a goodie to tell,
so his letter was one of those
published. Dawson’s teacher
was Martha Stephens.
Here is Dawson’s letter:
“I’m 10 now, but my most
embarrassing time happened
when I was 6. It’s bad enough
starting school for the first
time, but when your mom is
a kindergarten teacher, and
her room is right down the
hall, you can’t get away with
anything.
I was 6 before I knew a
sofa was to sit on. That’s be-
cause our clean clothes usu-
ally stayed on the sofa un-
til we wore them again. One
morning I grabbed my shirt
from the sofa and got ready
for school. When I got there,
my friend noticed something
vhanging out of my shirt. I
bet you’re thinking that it
was a fabric softener sheet. I
wish! My friends pulled out a
pair of my mom’s panties. The
teacher laughed as she car-
ried the panties to my mom.
My mother laughed, too, but I
didn’t think it was that funnyl
Now I always check my clothes
before leaving for school. If
you print my story, I bet my
mom will have a very embar-
rasfiing moment!”
Dawson Hicks
Yes. I hear Sally has had a
lot of ribbing since the letter
was printed.

A brutal struggle in the cut-
throat computer industry is
paired with a shattering psy-
chological game of cat and
mouse and an accusation of
sexual harassment in Michael
Crichton’s Disclosure. At the
center of the story is Tbm
Sanders, an up and coming ex-
ecutive with DigiCom in Seat-
tle, a man whose corporate fu-
ture is certain. Well, it was un-
til after a closed door meeting
with his new boss, a woman
who was his lover years ago,
but who has now been pro-
moted to the position he ex-
pected to receive.
Crichton picks up on two
current hot topics and weaves
them in to a page turner,
just an entertaining quick
read if you will. As Sanders
scrambles to defend himself
in the face of a harass-
ment charge, he is helped
by a sagacious woman lawyer
whose career had been built
on the successful prosecution
of men charged with sexual
mi 8-conduct. Trapped between
what he knows is true and
what others will assume to be
true, Sanders uncovers an elec-
tronic trail into the company’s
secrets and begins to grasp
just how cynical and manipu-
lative an abuse of truth has be-
come.

Epic hero, valiant general,
self-styled meesiah, alcoholic,
exotic dresser, Sam Houston
was all these and more. The
pivotal event of his life was
the Battle of San Jacinto when
fate handed him Santa Anna,
the Scourge of the Alamo,
along with the patrimony of
the nation of Thxas. Houston,
who survived both scandals
and war wounds that would
have buried ordinary men,
later became Thxas’ president,
its senator, and its governor.
Jeff Long’s Empire Of Bones
is a novel of Sam Houston and
the Thxas Revolution. Here the
author recreates the drama of
the San Jacinto battle with
Houston’s... rag-tag mutinous
troops bent on revenge for
their comrades’ horrific defeat
at the Alamo, a surprise en-
counter with a wing of Santa
Anna’s army, and the savage
slaughter of six hundred Mex-
icans at a cost of only a hand-
full of Americans. Among the
dead was a beautiful Mexi-
can woman, and this shock-
ing atrocity - as the South-
ern code regarded the murder
of a woman, became Houston’s
moral Rubicon.

Rater Decker, the LAPD’a
star homicide detective, and
his keen-witted and beauti-
ful wife, Rina Lazarus, con-
tinue to dazzle mystery fans
in Faye Keller man’s latest
white-knuckle thriller, Sanctu-
ary. This time they are cata-
pulted into a Byzantine maze
of murder and intrigue that
spans the globe from Los An-
geles to New York to Africa
and Israel.
From a quiet, luxurious
street north of Los Ange-
les, Arik Yalom, an Israeli di-
amond dealer and his fam-
ily have mysteriously disap-
peared. The house appears
undisturbed yet Decker’s
trained eye sees something out
of kilter • a perplexing cause
riddled with dead ends.
A few days later, high
above the streets of midtown
Manhattan, another diamond
dealer is found missing. Only
he’s lying in his own cold
blood - a murder that has emo-
tional resonance for the en-
tire Decker family. But before
Decker dun break the tragic
news to anyone, the Kleins’
rental van is found sidelined
on one of LA’s freeways and
the wife and children have van-
ished, too. /
Thus a missing persons case
explodes into a savage journey
through the nerve center of
the multi-billion dollar gem
industry and into the heart
of an all- too-human tale of
cunning and avarice.
