during part of the period covered. End paper maps by Louis H.
Gohmert also greatly enhance the value of the book. These in-
dicate the location of every community mentioned in the text;
show the streams, modern highways, the Cherokee and Choctaw
trails that crossed the county from north to south and east to
west, as well as the present-day oil fields.
Sources used are the usual ones found in county histories. These
include traditions, recollections and narratives of participants,
with some newspaper and census reports. The author also called
upon a good but frequently overlooked source for local history-
land titles and abstracts. These often prove a veritable gold mine
of information but in many instances as in Titus county, years
ago the courthouse with records was destroyed by fire. Where
available these records are most helpful.
This book is another indication of the fine work being done
by county historical committees under the inspiration and guid-
ance of the Texas State Historical Survey Committee. The author,
over the years, gathered items of interest and in 1963 began to
place them in more permanent form. The County Historical
Committee learned of his activities and expressed a desire to see
the material in book form. The Commissioners Court supplied
funds to pay for assembling the data and W. M. Morrison of
Waco agreed to have the book published.
