Meetings
The Association will hold its eighty-eighth annual meeting in Aus-
tin, March 1-3, at the Marriott Hotel. The conference opens Thurs-
day morning at io:oo with two joint sessions, one with the Texas
Association of Museums and the other with the Texas Parks and
Wildlife Department on the topic of historic preservation. The meet-
ing closes Saturday with a 2:00 P.M. session held jointly with the
Texas Committee for the Humanities. The topic of this final session
is "The Texas Frontier: Formative Myths behind the Nineteenth-
Century Clash of Cultures." Four speakers will address the subject
of formative myths in the minds of native Americans, Spaniards and
Mexicans, Anglo-Americans, and Afro-Americans.
Friday we will have two dinner speakers of particular note. De-
livering the luncheon address is Admiral B. R. Inman, a University
of Texas history graduate, a retired four-star admiral, for four years
director of the National Security Agency, and former deputy director
of the CIA. His topic is "Meeting International Competitive Chal-
lenges: An Historical Perspective." Friday evening Ambassador Ed-
ward A. Clark will deliver his presidential address. Ambassador Clark,
whose presidency will long be remembered for the dynamic vision he
imparted, will speak on "The Texas State Historical Association:
The Future Challenge." The speaker at Saturday's luncheon is As-
sociation vice-president Archie P. McDonald. Dr. McDonald, mem-
ber of the Texas Committee for the Humanities, will speak on "The
Texas Myths Project."
The Program Committee, chaired by Sharon R. Crutchfield, has
scheduled twenty-five sessions, promising something of interest to
every member. In addition to the sessions, book auction, and book
exhibitors, there will be a bus tour of Austin sites on Thursday after-
noon. We hope you will come join us for a memorable meeting.
The Nineteenth Annual Walter Prescott Webb Memorial Lectures
will be held March 15 in Arlington. The theme of this year's series is
"Walter Prescott Webb and the Teaching of History." For more in-
