than the president realized, and there his restless humanity will yet
emerge, flawed, imperfect, but not wholly malign. The appraisal of
history will likely not assign to him the greatness he craved; neither
will it condemn him to the obscurity and scorn he feared. Lyndon
Johnson still retains his capacity to command people's energies and
awaken their emotions, and the force of his personality will thus
achieve for him among historians as much immortality as an American
politician and president can reasonably expect.
