Opposite page: The Barber Shop by Edgar Dorsey Taylor, 1944. Black Conte
crayon on paper, 9 x 13' inches. aylor (1904-1978), a teacher of art at the
University of Texas in 1944, spent many afternoons exploring and drawing
Austin's varied neighborhoods. The result was his "Austin Series" of over a
hundred drawings. He was particularly attracted to East Austin where he
sketched numerous scenes of black community life. This image of a black bar-
bershop comes from the days when John W. Hargis, the focus of an article in
