Koasati (or Coushatta) Indians by Lino SAnchez y Tapia, like his watercolor of
Caddo Indians on page 176 of this issue, was based on a sketch by artist-car-
tographer Jose Maria Sinchez y Tapia who accompanied Gen. Manuel de Mier
y Terin's Mexican Boundary Commission on its 1828-1829 exploring expedi-
tion into Texas. Berlandier, the botanist and zoologist for the expedition, also
made sketches in preparation for writing his report about Texas Indians, "In-
digenes de Mexique," which contained this watercolor. The manuscript report
was eventually edited by John C. Ewers and published in 1969 as The Indians of
Texas in 830o.232
