POPULATION. 93

CENTERS OF AREA AND POPULA-
TION, TEXAS A, D U. S.
The center of area of Texas is a point
20 miles northeast of Brady, McCulloch
County. The center of gravity of popula-
tion, according to the census of 1930, was
near McGregor, Texas, according to un-
official estimate. Exact calculation for
1930 has never been made by the Bureau
of the Census.
There has not been very rapid move-
ment of the center of gravity of popula-
tion of Texas because, while there has
been rapid farm population increase in
the western part of the state, the growth
of the cities, lying largely in the eastern
half, has had a counteracting effect. The
center of population in 1880 was 6.4
miles southwest of Thornton, Limestone
County; in 1890 it was 3 miles southwest
of Otto, Falls County; in 1900 it was 4.5
miles north northwest of Otto, Falls
County; in 1910 it was 7 miles west south-
west of Waco, McLennan County; in 1920
it was 12.1 miles southwest of Waco and
G miles east northeast of McGregor, Mc-
Lennan County. The center of gravity of
population for Texas was not calculated
for the census of 1930, but it is probably
about 8 or 10 miles west of the point at
which it was located in 1920.
The center of area of the United States
is 10 miles north of Smith Center, Smith
County, Kansas. The center of gravity of
population, according to the census of
1930, was 2.9 mile* northeast of Linton,
Stockton Township, Greene County, Ind.
The center of population of the United
States was 23 miles east of Baltimore in
1790, date of first census. It moved rap-
idly westward and by 1840 was 16 miles
south of Clarksburg, W. Va. In 1920 it
was 1.9 miles west of Whitehall, Owen
County, Ind.
