Stamford Fire
Department
Receives
Check
The Stamford Fire Depart-
ment received a check for $ 150.00
recently from Texas Farm Bureau
Insurance Companies as an expres-
sion of thanks for the Department's
work on the property of Michael H
Sawyers.
The money will be used for
their loss prevention program.
The Texas Farm Bureau In-
surance Companies pays fire de-
partments this amount when the
department works at afire in rural
areas, involving property insured
•_by them.
The Insurance Company be-
lieves Lire departments have con-
tributed to reduce the amount of
loss involved by fire and more im-
portantly, to prevent fires. It is their
hope this money will help the Stam-
ford Fire Department in their pro-
gram.
DNA Testing
Declared
Emergency
State Senator Tom Haywrxid,
K-Wichita Falls, along with his 30
State colleagues are co-sponsoring
legislation to make DNA testing
available to certain Texas prison-
ers.
Senate Bill 3, drafted by
Senators Robert Duncan, R-Lub-
bock, and Rodney Ellis, D-Hous-
ton, was filed on January 17 and
given emergency status this week
by Governor Rick Perry. The ur-
gency of the measure is evidenced
by the coming together of all 31
senate members to usher its passage
through legislative process. The bill
is scheduled for a hearing on Mon-
day.
"The immense support be-
hind this bill is testament to our
slate's crucial need for DNA test-
ing," Haywood said. "From a sci-
entific standpoint, I believe we
should use all avenues available

of our justice system."
The bill provides for post-
conviction DNA testing for defen-
dants in cases where:
- typing DNA would make a
difference
- biological evidence exists
and is in a condition that can be
tested
- the identity of the perpetra-
tor was an issue at trial
"The State of Texas needs to
maintain a tough on crime' stance,"
Haywood said, "but we also need
to send the message that we are
tough on the truth. This type of
DNA testing will allow for that."
