Jimmy and Leota McCorkle
February 23, 1951. It was a cold and rainy February afternoon when
these two embarked on a life journey together...
It may sound like the opening line of a novel, but it is actually the
beginning of the marriage of Jimmy and Leota McCorkle. Together they
have made a home, built a family, and created countless friendships along
the way.
Please join us in celebrating their 50 years of marriage at a come-
and-go-reception Saturday, February 17 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at the Trin-
ity Baptist Church. No gifts please. Cards and memories welcome.

Lueders-Avoca ISD Facility
Study Committee Holds First
Meeting
The recently appointed 30 member L-A ISD facilities study com-
mittee met for its first time Thursday evening. The committee met at the
High School. The committee discussed their purpose, which is to study
the facility needs at the High School and develop a recommendation for
action, if any. The committee loured the entire High School complex . They
visited each classroom, and the weight room.
The group met and discussed their observations from the tour The
group noted that the main building of the high school was in fairly good
shape, having been recently remodeled. The classrooms were remodeled
and two additional classrooms were added onto the High School The only
critical need in the main building of the High School is a needed upgrade
to the healing/air conditioning system for the classrooms.
The committee noted that the cafeteria, classroom, and weight room,
which are located in wooden buildings behind the main structure of the
school, do have many needs for improvement The wooden buildings were
built in 1951-1952. The buildings have antiquated heating systems, poor
or no air conditioning systems, electrical problems, ceiling and wall cracks,
plumbing problems, and two of the buildings are actually below grade and
water runs into the building when it rains.
The committee discussed the sch«x>l gymnasium. The court is 20
Teet shorter than standard courts. The dressing rooms are very small and
not ADA accessible.
Next, the committee discussed the funding sources available for pos-
sible construction projects. There are two sources of funding available.
The first is the Instructional Facilities Allotment program through the State
of Texas. In this program the State pays for S59I of the cost of the bond
payments. The other source of funds comes from the federal government.
This source of funds, QZAB, provides zero interest loans for the remodel-
ing of school facilities. The school still has to pay back the entire prin-
ciple.
A the committee moved toward the end of their meeting, they dis-
cussed the communities' perceptions .of the needs of the High School, and
whether the community would support the bond issue necessary to fix the
existing problems. It was noted that the district had no current bonded
indebtedness. In addition, the committee reviewed the fact that the Dis-
trict had recently remodeled the classnxims at both the High School and
the Elementary School.
The committee is going to meet again next week to continue the
discussion of the needs of the High School and to begin to develop a plan
for rrieeting those needs.

What 'lb Do When Bad News
Hits Your Stocks
You open the newspapers and see (he article - a company in which your
own stock has produced a defective product Consumers are alarmed.
The government is investigating. It’s and investor’s worst nightmare. Or
is it?
Product difficulties are only one ot the factors that can affect a company's
sock performance. Accounting irregularities, litigation, management
changes and other events also can take a toll on a firm’s stock price.
As a concerned investor, what should you do when bad news strikes
your stocks ’ Here's the first thing to remember: Don’t panic. Don’t make
hasty decisions based on today's headlines There are at least two good
reasons why you shouldn't rush to sell y our beleaguered stocks.
First, if the media have been spotlighting a company's bad news, it’s
likely that the stock price isn't just dow n it may be way down. And as
you’ll recall, the basic rule of investing is to "buy low and sell high." If
it’s at all possible you’ll usually want to avoid selling a stock when its
price is low
The second reason you shouldn't immediately sell a stock hit by bad
news is that the reason for the downturn may be transitory. /X detective
product can be remedied, or even removed f rom the market A change in
management could turn out to be tor the better. Litigation could end fa-
vorably. In other words, once the ailment is remedied, the stock could
regain its health meaning the puce could bounce back
That’s why it’s essential that you look beyond a stock s short-term woes.
It may be hard to ignore the commotion surrounding a dose of bad public-
ity. but you must do just that if you're investing tor the long term. Your
investment representative can help you evaluate your stock’s long-term
prospects. Are its financial fundamentals still basically sound? Does it
have a line of products that, in general, enjoys a competitive advantage
within its industry? Is it in a business that’s poised for significant growth?
If you can answer “yes” to these questions, then you’ll most likely want
to maintain your long-term, buy-and hold outlook. In fact, you may want
to use the downturn as an opportunity to buy more ,shares.
To put yourself in a position in which you can turn bad news to your
advantage, however, don’t pin all your hopes on any one stock. You should
have other holdings to fall back on while the temporarily troubled stiKk
has time to recover That means you need to maintain a diversification
portfolio - one that contains good mix of stocks, bonds, governments, such
as money market funds. Diversification provides you with a variety of
growth and income opportunities while helping you “dilute” the effects
that bad news can have on a single stock
Armed with a long-term perspective and a diversified portfolio, you’ll
be prepared if trouble comes visiting one of your stocks. And, as is lhe
case in all walks of life, preparation is a cornerstone of success.
