Obituaries
Evelyn D. Watson
Evelyn I). Watson died Feb-
ruary 6. 2001 at a local hospital.
She was born March 19,
1929. daughter of Arthur and Della
Dudcnsing, Old Cilory, Texas. She
attended public school in Paint
Creek, and studied nursing at Stam-
ford Hospital. In 1951 she married
Jack W. Watson, a West Texas At-
torney They made their home in
Stamford
Mrs. Watson was a valued
citizen, serving her community in
many capacities. She was a mem-
ber of Stamford Library Board ten
years, a member of Carnegie Li-
brary Restoration Committee. Ac-'
David Martindale
David Martindale. 76, passed away at hrs home in Georgetown on Thurs-
day February 8, 2001. Funeral sen ices were *t 2:(XJ p in Saturday at the
Orient Street Church of Christ in Stamford with Stan Harvey officiating.
Burial followed in the Rockdale Cemetery in Haskell County, directed by
Tankersley Funeral Home.
David was born July 4. 1924 in Haskell County. Texas to Gene and
Lummie Martindale. He joined the Navy on December 4. 1942, serving
three years in Europe, including the Normandy Invasion He married Ruby
Faye Wilson on April 21, 1943 in Sweetwater. TX. David was a retired
oilfield contract pumper for over 40 years and a rancher. He was a mem-
ber of the Georgetown Highway 29 Church of Christ, the Veterans of For-
eign Wars, and the Sons of Hermann
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Faye Martindale of Georgetown; two
sons and daughters-in-law, David (Mike) and Glenda Martindale of San
Angelo, TX and Dennis and Pam Martindale of Georgetown, TX; four
grandchildren, Joni Martindale of Houston, Lori Martindale of College
Station. David E. Martindale of Georgetown and Seth A. Martindale of
Pflugerville, Tx; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Warren and Thelma
Martindale of Sweetwater, and Roy and Ellen Martindale of Haskell; two
sisters, Joyce Sims of Wichita Falls and Patsy Ellis of Brownsville. A host
of cousins, nieces, nephews, and other relatives. The family requests that
all memorials be made to the donors favorite charity.

member of Stamford Art Foundation, she served on the Board ol Direc-
tors. and participated annually in art show activities.
She was chosen as official hostess ot the Texas Cowboy Reunion in
1966. A member ol the Pierian Club, she was President in 1960-1961. She
remained active until her death. She also was a member of the Pierian Past
President's Association
As a member of Stamford (iarden Club, she was an avid gardener.
She traveled throughout the stale as a flower show judge, served the local
organization several limes as flower chairman. Evelyn won numerous
awards in horticulture and was an award-winning arranger. She shared her
talents in this regard for years, arranging the altar I lowers at Central Pres-
byterian Church She remained active as a member of Stamford Garden
Club Past Presidents
An active member of Pink Ladies Auxiliary.’Evelyn was instrumen-
tal m redecorating several rooms at Stamford Memorial Hospital. She
served al the hospital switchboard many months, al the time of her death,
was responsible for issuing uniforms to members.
Predeceased by her husband. Jack W. Watson. Evelyn Watson is sur-
vived by two sisters and a brother: Virginia Swanson, Colorado Springs,
Colorado; Margaret Decker, Bronte, Texas; and Eddie Shanalelt, Ranger.
Texas; and nieces and nephews: Robert Swanson, Colorado Springs. Colo-
rado; Gene W. Curry. Fort Worth; Michael B . Watson. Abilene; Melissa
W Jones, Sny der; Della Shaffer, Bronte; Ricky Shanalelt. Ranger; Bartlett
and Cathy Shanalelt. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and several great nieces
Tom Ray Smith
Tom Ray Smith, 7,3, of Stamford, died Sunday at his home. Funeral
services were at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Temple Baptist Church in Stam-
ford with the Rev. Jesse Morton officiating. Burial followed in the New
Hope Cemetery under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home.
Mr Smith was born December 26, 1927 in Kaufman, TX to Sam and
Nora Smith. He moved to the New Hope Community in 1940 and married
Effie Burhham in 1943 in Haskell. Mr. Smith was a retired farmer for the
Swenson Land and Cattle Co., retiring in 1989. He was in the National
Guard, a Baptist, and a member of the Texas Cowboy Reunion Old Timers
Association. He is survived by his wife: Effie Smith of Stamford; three
sons, Allen Smith, Tommy Smith, and Sam Smith, all of Stamford; one
daughter, Charlotte Arendall of Stamford; one sister, Pauline Gross of
Mounl Grove, Missouri; 17 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Raymond Smith in 1996.
Pallbearers were grandsons, Craig Smith, Matt Arendall, Jr. Smith, Will
Smith, Johnny Smith, Justin Arendall, Justin Crowson, Colton Smith,
Kendall Smith and Kevin Smith

A memorial service for evelyn D. >on was held al Central Pres-
byterian Church, Tuesday morning, February 13, with the Rev. Larry Black
and the Rev. Dr Henry Chnsholm officiating. Services were under the
direction of Kinney Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice ol the Big Country
or to a favorite charily.
A.C. Newman
A.C. Newman, 82. of Stamford, died Tuesday at a local hospital.
Funeral services will be Thursday al 2:00 p in. at the Tankersley Funeral
Home Chapel with the Rev. James Bringham officiating.
Mr. Newman was born October 8, 1918 in Alby, Texas to Robert and
Ella Newman. He married Edna Davis on May 5, 1940. After the war he
moved to Lueders and farmed until 1946 when he moved to Snyder to
work for Chevron Oil Company as a plant manager, retiring from that in
1980, he remained there and still farmed until 1985 when he retired and
moved to Stamford. He was a member of the Central Baptist Church in
Stamford and a veteran of W.W.I1.
He is survived by his wife: Edna Newman of Stamford. Two sons:
Richard Newman of Anson, and Charles Newman of Irving, TX. One sis-
ter: Billie Younts of Memphis, Tennessee. Four grandchildren and two
great grandchildren.
