Reference Calendar for 200 Years.
For ascertaining any day of the week for any given time within two hundred years from- the intro=
duction of the new style, 1752, to 1952, inclusive.
To ascertain any day of the week, first look in the table for the year required, and under the months
are figures which refer to the corresponding figures at the head of the columns of days below. For ezr
amle: To kaow on what day of the week Aug, 4 fell in the year 1914. in the table of years look for
1914, and in s- parallel line, under Aug. As Fig. 6, which directs to Col. 6, in which it will be .seen that
Aug. 4 fell on Tuesday.-From Whittaker's London Almanack.

BEGINNING OF YEAR.
The Athenians began the year in June, the Macedonians in September, the Rlo-
mans first in March and afterward in January, the Persians on Aug. 11, the ancient
Mexicans on Fe'b. 23. The Chinese year, which begins -late in January or early in
february, is similar to. the Mdohammedan year.in having- twelve months of twenty-nine,
and thirty days alternating, While in every nineteen years:-there are seven _~ears
which have-thirten months. -This is not quite commenauate -wt-h -planetary --move-
ment. hence the Chinese have formed a cycle of sixty years in which- period twenty-tw
intercalary months occur.
