So walks can be formalized
Senatep
by Melinda Petross
"* The Student Senate-, approved
: a motion to send a. letter to
University President
Dr. W. 0. Trogdon recommending
that a "teacher late policy" be
written into the handbook. The
action took place at the regular
meeting of the senate last Monday
evening.
It has been an unwritten rule
that if a professor does not show
up within 10 minutes after the
bell to begin class, the students
can take a walk. A professor is to
be given 15 minutes to get to class
before the students can leave.
The senate believes if the rule
is written in the handbook there
will be no question about the
right of students to leave or how
long they have to wait.
A report from the committee
assigned to find out whose
responsibility it is to repair the
roads around the stadium stated
that the city is responsible for the
roads, but the University
maintenance department was in
charge of the parking lots. A
representative of the city said
roads will be repaired as soon as
possible But the parking lots will
not be repaired until construction
is finished in that area, according
to a University spokesman.
It was brought before the
senate that some students feel it is
unfair that people on the block
should have to take the 'finals at
the end of their nine-week block
courses if they are graduating
seniors. Students on the block are
those who have classes the 'first 9
weeks of a semester and student
teach the last 9 weeks. A
committee was appointed to look
into the matter. '<
Some complaints have been
made by students getting tickets
for parking in reserved, parking
spaces at night. It was stated that
reserved spaces are reserved 24
hours a day and the campus police
have the right to givf a ticket to ■
anyone who violates the rule.
Last year the senate had a
project to put signs advertising
TSU on Interstate 20. Everything
was set up to have them made
during the summer but nothing
was done. The senate voted to
take up the project again and
Michael? *Steck, . student body
president, appointed a committee
to check into it.

organization Dr. Weldon Newton,
head of the department of,,
agriculture said, "we hope Jo <.
make this a continuing thing we
can depend on from , year to
.year." Dr. Newton poiiited out
that appoximately $1,000
annually in scholarships has-been
raised locally over a period of
years, but "the problem we have
had in the past is that we never
knew how much we would have
available for scholarships or how
many scholarships we could offer
students."
Dr. Newton continued, "we
want to emphasize that the
association will help- provide
students with a college education,
and will also give them an
opportunity to continue to
compete in something they love
and they are already involved in."
Solicitation of funds for the
scholarships has already started;;
according to Pr. Newton, tad
donations may tie made to the
association by sending checks to
the Rodeo Scholarship Fund at
Tarleton. He said that funds will
be sought from individuals,
businesses and corporations." He
stated also that .any .funds above
the amount required . for
scholarships;; will go' into a
permanent endowment fund.
A local screening committee
will award the scholarships each
year, and plans call for an
advisory board of well-known
rodeo personalties to be' selected
for the association.
The boys team has been
participating in National
