Army study indicates
troops may be 'duds'
Today's soldier may lack the intelligence to operate his complex,
highly tpchnological weaponry
That's what an urireleased army study of the fiqhting quality of
all volunteer army concludes, accordmq to the Washinqton Star
Service
Capt Dave Williams of the TSU military science faculty said he
could not comment on the validity of the report because "it's been
■ too Song since I've been in a troop unit "
His commander, Maj James J G.illachet, entici/ed the story,
claiming the statements were "out of context" and "only pieces of
sentences and paragraphs
"My experience hasn't revealed widespread irrcompetanee." he
added.
Mai Gallacher said I SU ROTC cadets are "fairly competent " In
order to be commissioned, a 2 0 GPA must be maintained arid a
degree earned, he said
A major part of the pi obi cm, according to the study, is that the
intelligence levpls of many of the crews manning tanks and an
defense systems may be too low to operate them at the Army's
standards for combat-ready performance
The survey, called the "Army Training Study," said the problem
is compounded by corporals and sergeants who know little more
then the privates they are supposed to train A high level of
"turbulence," constant reassignment* and extraneous activities also
cot into the training time for combat units, the survey said

Winter paid a brief visit last weekend, leaving a light snow-covered ground, an abandoned farm implement and
dusting of snow on the Cross Timbers Basin Saturday. The the setting sun provided an interesting study in contrasts.
