TSU has Spirited
Students
Ten Tarleton State University
students were selected this spring as
1992-93 recipients of the John
Tarleton Spirit Award presented by
the University's Division of
Student Services. Thirteen other
students and ten organizations were
presented T-Service awards for their
contributions to the University dur-
ing the 1992-93 academic year.
One of the most coveted honors
on campus, the John Tarleton
Spirit Award recognizes outstanding
contributions to the student life
program at Tarleton. Four juniors
and six seniors were selected for the
honor among 19 nominations.
John Tarleton Spirit Award
winners were juniors Chris Gordon
of Irving, Paul Steven Paschall of
Irving, Kathryn Anne Perm of Fort
Worth and Todd Anthony Smith of
Arlington, and seniors Susan
Michelle Black of Decatur, Michael
Jimmy Copeland of Dublin, Lydia
Hobgood of Houston, Justin Frank
Lookadoo of Flint, Francine Warren
will succeed. Their efforts leave
behind a wealth of opportunity and
experiences for fellow students.
Sometimes called the "other educa-
tion", these extracurricular activities
are an important part of the educa-
tional and maturing process.
Upper level and graduate
students are eligible for the honor
which was created in 1988 and crite-
ria includes good academic standing
and a well rounded resume of activi-
ties, accomplishments and leader-
ship positions.
The T-service award is a non-
athletic, no-academic award pre-
sented to students and organizations
bringing state and national recogni-
tion to Tarleton. Individuals receiv-
ing the T-Service award were David
Baldwin of Cleburne, Terri Conger
of Stephenville, Jimmy Flores of
Ballinger, Bena Glasscock of Fiona,
Dusty Joiner of Center Point,
Nency Kellum of Arlington, Justin
Lookadoo of Flint, Duncan Parrish
of Fort Worth, Stephen Pinnell of
Winnsboro, Greg Priddy of
Desdemona, Reggy Spencer of
Roby, Amanda Spenrath of
Comfort and Francine Warren of
Copperas Cove.
Organizations recognized as T-
Service award recipients were Alpha
Phi Alpha, the Data Processing
Management Association, Kappa
Delta Rho, Kappa Kappa Psi the
Plowboys, the Resident Advisor
Association, the Student;
Government Association, thei
Student Programming Association,
the Student Social Work
Association and Tau Beta Sigma.
Awards were presented during
the Student Leadership Banquet
hosted each spring by the Division
of Student Services. The banquet
honors members of the Student
Government Association and the
Student Programming Association
as well as candidates for the T-
Service award and John Tarleton
Spirit Award.

TSU Awaits Center

As the warm weather days in-
crease, progress continues on the
construction of Tarleton's Student
Development Center.
Construction began with a
groundbreaking ceremony on
March 11,1993, and it is expected
to be finished in time for the Fall
1994 semester.
Planning for the new Student
Development Center began in
1990, when the students of TSU
voted to raise general use fees by
$3 per semester hour to assist in
funding the $13.7 million dollar
center. According to Dr. Johnny
Johnson, who was named as User
Coordinator for the project in
1990, "One-half of the funding for
the center is coming from the stu-
dents, and half from the univer-
sity."
The Student Development
Center will be - located on
Vanderbilt, across from the Fine
Arts Center. Once completed, the
89,000 square foot center will fea-
ture many areas not available in
the current Student Center. A
1,000 seat convention area, out-
door patio dining, and a fitness
center are a few of the new fea-
tures, Departments such as the
Placement Center, the Student
Health Center, and the Student
Support Services will have ex-
panded spaces within the new
Center. Student publications,
such as the J-TAC and Grassbur
will benefit from larger work
spaces and a new darkroom. In ad-
dition, there will be more meeting
rooms available for student orga-
nizations and study groups.
Dr. Wanda Mercer, Vice-
President of Student Services
stated in an October 1992 J-TAC
interview, "I think that this build-
ing is something that students
will be proud of. It will.be a nice
showcase for the university and
the community."

Welcome to Tarleton State.
Now that you are here, you are
probably wondering what there is
to do. Well, there are over 100 or-
ganizations on campus, and one in
particular might be what you are
looking for.
Student Programming
Association, or S.P.A., is an orga-
nization which sponsers many
campus activities. The organiza-
tion is geaded by Interim Director
of Student Activities, Donna
Strohmeyer. "S.P.A. is the main
programming board on campus.
We sponser several events, such as
Haunted House, Tarleton
Christmas, and the major concerts,"
says Stromeyer. "We will also be
sponsering events in conjunction
with the Tarleton Gameroom," she
adds.
SJP.A. members are expected to
do the following: a)attend and par-
ticipate in all S.P.A. sponsered
events, b)attend and participate in
weekly meetings, c)and finally,
help with the set-up and tear-down
of all S.P.A. events. Although
there is some work involved, it is
always fun!
S.P.A. has an open membership.
To become a member, you must
submit an application and go
through an interviewing process.
Applications are available in the
Peer Advisor Packets, or you can
pick one up in the Student
Activities office(second floor of the
Tarleton center). The deadline for
the applications is September 9,
S.P.A. meets every Thursday
evening at 5:15 upstairs in the
Tarleton Center.
