have been executing a series or robber-

where by the shrewdness or Captain
Tom Hughes their laid nnd Ingenious
schemes were discovered These men
are all or them expert cracksmen and
their arrests are Important ones. Cap-

called a "pretty" case. Sheriff .lones.or

Taking Talmags's Thunder
lliitiiiini'itu Pa. January 2. For the
past 22 years ltev. W II. II. Snyder has
been pastor of the Salem Iterormed
Church which numbers In Its congrega-
tion some of the mot prominent men In
the oltv. Previous to his summer vaca-
tion Mr. Snyder preached a sermon
which was so much grander than prev-
ious efforts that the congregation re-
marked about It. A young attorney
whoJieard the sermon took notes and
subsequently he was reading a volume
of ltev. T. Dewltt Talmage and noticed
he similarity. Upon Investigation the
discovery was made that the semion
preached by Hev. Mr. Snyder as original
was the work of Mr. Talmage. Some
prominent church members I old Mr.
Snyder that he had better resign as his
further connection wilh the church
would decrease the congregation. Mr.
Snyder It Is thought will comply with
the request as soon as a position can be
obtained.
Another Siren In the Hocks.
On Saturday morning a verdant Indi-
vidual bearing the cognomen of John
McOee made an nilidavlt before Justice
Crawrord against one llattle llaxter a
very very soiled damsel with whom It
seems MrUee had previously been ou
lover's terms. He said llattle had ap-
propriated six or his i'AI gold pieces
without his consent and having been
told she had done It llattle returned
three of them saying It was nil she had.
Ills conlldeuce in her was shaken how-
ever and he enlisted the blind dodders
to assist him In accounting tor the dis-
crepancy. Tliovvarrant;ror her arrest
was executed by Deputy Constable
Krempkau and llattle was brought Into
court where she waived an examina-
tion and was placed under a $500 bond
to await action or the grand Jury. Hat-
llc railed to give the bond however nnd
now languishes In the dungeon or the
wicked and rrlendless.
Getting In the Wrong House.
Alberto Hatnos a rather good-looking
Mexican was before the Itecorder this
morning charged with disturbing the
peace of Mr. Herman Ilrcndel and fam-
ily last night. Mr. llrendel testified that
he was awakened by a man trying to
get In at Ihe w Indow. As the fellow
raited Ihe window Mr. II. dealt him a
blow which knocked him back and then
he went away ltaruos said he was
drunk and mistook the house for one
where disreputable women lived. This
was his excuse. He was Informed that
getting In at Ihe window was not even
countenanced at these houses and a
one oi i was accortungiy imposed

OOUNTY ROADS.
A Scathing Criticism of the Board o
County Commissioners.
Ilitltiir Pan Antonio Mailt.
At the point where the Illnz-Kngul
mann road turns out or the lane about
one-hair mile rroiu the SaUdo In
a southwesterly course towards the
Government hill I was struck by some
essential alterations In Colonel llrack-
enrldge's late fencing which caused
Ihe following reflections; Why (I lit
Colonel Ilrackenrldge more the on
rence already built by whluli the nboto
mentioned lane between Mr. Klvenhauer
and Mr. Ackermann was prolonged lo
the terminus of Iho iccalleil lilt 7.-
Kngelmann roadwhich was ror It be-
1 ngs 1 think already lo the lliinvt a
passed-at the city limits and left a
passage between his land and Mr. Ack-
ermann'a pasture? Has the Colonel
changed his plan or operation that Is
to run said lane on to the next estab-
lished road Inside tho city limits as It
had been proposed by our honorable
olty fathers and Intends to run It now
through snld passage.lhough not cleared
rrom brush nnd other natural obstruc-
tions or Impediments? One would be
Inclined lo make this conclusion If he
had left the passage wide enough Tor a
second class road. Notwithstanding
this fact however we are JustllUd in
suspecting something wrong as one
member ot the County Commissioners'
Court maintains and certainly that
member Is not the most unimportant
that the road along Mr. Aikcr-
mann'a pasture Is by fur Hie best
and the nearest. However Inconceiv-
able like the holy trinity tills assertion
Is as they will have lo run It back for
some distance to make It Intersect the
city line at some remoter point It may
be clear and Intelligible to high people
but certainly not to people who only
converse with the plebaus. Why do
our County Commissioners not use Ihelr
authority? Why do I hey permit Colonel
Ilrackenrldge lo close up an Important
legally established road before Us ler-
mtnns? Is It because our City Fathers
would perhaps not have forced Col. 11.
to give the rfght-or-way Inside the City
limits? This Is no excuse; they could
have walled for that ract. Another reu-
son for Ihe complaisance or the Com-
missioners towards Col. 11. (hough men-
Honed the last It may not be most lm-
probnble Is the following: At or about
whero Ihe Seguln road Intersects the olty
limits a hot light Is fought between the
Honorable County Commissioners' Court
and Mr. John Jnmes or Ibis city. That
gentleman did not reverently lake oil
his hat nnd bow to the worst and most
unjuslllled change or n road or all Ihe
bad ones that have been made by this
honorable body; he had Ihe courage lo
put his rence In the middle or the road
so changed and this tact may account
for the above mentioned complaisance or
the County Commissioners' Court this
body not wishing to light at two differ-
ent points at the same time; (It win not
be denied that It would have taken some
trouble to Induco our Honorable City
Fathers to actually make a dash at the
much reared Colonel.) They don't sing
either: "Mourlr pour la pnrtrle o'est le
sort le plus beau." etc.
Another nuestlon arises- Is this .
Justilled change or the Seguln road
norm iigiiuug jorr as mere any kind
or right or Justice In the action there
being no cause for a change nud to put
the road on another man's land without
his permission without paying him
dnmages? And what kind ot a rosd!
Good gracious! One breaks a wheel
another one the axle a third one throws
his freight Into Mr. Ackerman'a rence
etc. Considering that to all this comes
tho probability that the change Is per-
hapa the cause or the surrender or the
good Important Illnz-Kngelmann road
(Ihe change or the latter may be consid-
ered as equivalent to a surrender or dis-
continuance). Verily! I am entitled to
exolaim: Stop your blessed actions or
wo will perlsn at the hands or your
blessed works.
Those citizens that demolish Mr. J.
James rence Indirectly; participate) In
the bad action or our honorable County
Commissioners' Court. 1 maintain that
road Is not worth to demolish a rent e
for It. they ought to petition for the old
Seguln road where It Justly and right
eously belongs. Our great and Illustri-
ous German writer Fr. Schiller says:
"It Is the curse of tho bad deed that It Is
bound to continuously produce bad.!"
Our honorable County Commissioners'
may study this and Improve by It.
Very respectfully. Jul. I.ikck.
