SAN PEDRO SPRINGS.
Tlie Directors of tho Museum or Nnl-
ttral History nt Ha. 1'eilro .Springs nre
Interesting themselves to male nddl-
tlons to llie c.llccllou niul make It more
nearly wltnt It was originally designed
It should oe a depository for all natural
objects that could possibly be collected
In Southwestern Texas with ns many
foreign specimen as the directory could
secure the means of nddintf thereto.
'J'be location of the museum Is all that
could be desired but nothing hits been
donelOKhe diameter to Its surround-
ings. The park In which It stands
needs a cure that It has never received
at the hands of the oily. It Is nt pres-
ent merely an Immense heer garden (0
which our citizens flock n Sunday be-
cause It Is the only dvc.nt publlo-loaflng
place In or about the city. The Com-
mon Council one to the ilslorlcal Inter-
est which centers around the Alamo
City a debt they bate never paid ; they
.we to tin citizens for wh.ui they legis-
late somo better provision for rural
pleasure than they have yet made; they
owe to the strangers within our gates
drawn here by the report of the beauty
of this ancient city nt least one public
place that It would not be a misnomer to
oall a pleasure park. Nature has mad.
Han Pedro Springs a beautiful plate.
Nature provided tor the old Alamo City
an unequalled attraction at the head f
the tiau Antonio river; n perfect bower
of beauty a region of enchantment that
should have been kept Inviolate from
private possession and forever devoted
to the purposes of n public park.
That natural attraction has been ren-
dered useless to the city for all coming
time by a short-sighted policy that has
esteemed n few thousand dollars of more
consequence than the acres for which the
city to be would give hundreds of thou-
sands of dollars. Their recovery Is past
praying for. San 1'cdro cprlngs remain.
It Is bnt right they should be luadeas at-
tractive and beautiful as money can
mako them. They are fur the people
ntd all beauty particularly natural
beauty Is a potent factor in the educa-
tion ef the people's mind. .Make the
place where the children llnd recreation
beautiful If you would have them
love the city where they dwell
and grow up with pleasant mem-
ories of it. The money spent in
schools and parks Is always well spent.
Let the city see to It that San l'edro
park Is redeemed from the dry rot and
decay Into which It Is falling.
The museum dlreotory we aro In-
formed are taking steps to Improve the
collection and enlarge It. For this pur-
pose they seed funds and in order to
raise thorn have decided to Institute a
course of "museum lectures" the pro-
ceeds to go to tho museum fund.
We bespeak for this movement the
hearty co-operatloa of our citizens and
hope that such encourages ent and ma-
terial support will he accorded theeflbrt
to place the museum on a better finan-
cial footing ns wllleiwure thudcslreii re-
sult. San Antonio is miles behind. Her
niggardly public policy must be changed
and a larger liberality charactcrlez her
in the future or she will be hopelessly
left In the eddies and side swirls of the
great current of progress having neither
part nor lot in its movement.
Tut: Times claims to be the father ef
the Sin Antonio boom lor the conven-
tion. No .no disputes the claim and n.
on. has seen the boom. Did It die
R-boomln'?
Texas seems bitten by a big tarantula
all over tn spots. Itiots Irom the Terri-
tory clear down to the Mexican border
ere In order and bad blood is engendered
on the slightest provocation. The
northers seem te have little or no In-
fluence In cooling human passions and
one Is almost tempted to believe as of
old thai the comet's tall lias lashed the
denizens of the air Into fury and they
have stirred up the people to madness.
.Keep cool Is good advice now. It will
ood be so not you can't.
Tiir.np. Is no longer any reasonable
donbt of the real cause of Secretary Man-
ning's illness. It Is confidently alserted
that he has neverbeen In sympathy with
the I'resldcnt's hollow-hearted policy of
n sham civil service reform and lias been
greatly annoyed by it. It Is alio well
known that at the last Cabinet session
just before lie win atrlok.n down there
was an open rupture between himself
and his chief and that warm' words
passed between them. It Is now as-
serted by the Philadelphia 1'r.ss that at
thlslast Cabinet council Secretary Man-
ning tendered his portfolio to the Presi-
dent determined to no longer hold the
false position Into which he was forced
by I he executive policy lie that as It
may there seems to bo no doubt that
should Mr. Manning recover his health
sulllclently to do so ho will not again
take hla seat at the council-board. This
fact Is ominous taken In connection
with another that nearly all the leading
Democratic journals of the country nre
cither In open hostility to the adminis-
tration or decidedly lukewarm In Its
support. The great New York dallies
the Sun and the World the Knqulrer.

Oh the wholo the "two Sams" have
made a good thing out of Chicago; some-

Or the results to Ireland of Mr. Glad-
stone's plans even should they succeed
wo know nothing certainly. We only
know that these plans aro fully approved
by Mr. Parnell and that Mr. Parnell has
approved himself the ablest and most
astute Irish leader nf this generation.
Oa that warrant. If no other all Irish-
Americans would rejoice to see Mr.
Gladst.ne's scheme given a full aod fair
trial. Late dispatches from over the
water give little assurance that he will
be able to successfully carry his meas-
ures through Parliament. He seems
however to be much more sanguine
than his lieutenants; and It may be that
as on former occasions his hopefulness
has more correctly read the signs of the
times than the fears of his followers.
The "old man eloquent" hns many

success of his measures for Ireland's re-
lief as they would In their own personal

Tiik c.untry Is full if Democratic sur-
prises this spring. Toledo gave the
"Ancient and Klshy" a great big sur-
prise .n Tuesday ; eleoted "Nasv"AI-

city ticket for the Kepublican party.
Tiik passage of the cremation act by
the French Deputies seems to have
caused quite a stir throughout France.
We cannot see why. No one is obliged
to be burned that does not want to and
this Is a decided Improvement over the
old way when the scorching came nolens

When Do Lesseps left Paris for Pan-

would be back In GO days. He has re-

his canal will be done nnd let him come
to time about that and people will have
more faith In him than many of them
now have.

Some of those English ninnies hav. not
fairly recovered from the idea that this
is a colony or Great Britain yet. They
want a little decency and respeot for
this country as a nation with a big N

over here to take up our laads; a.ml over
their own paupers to colonize them;
tease tnese lands under serr-c.ndltlons
that perpetuate pauperism to the tblrty-
rourtu generation; live at "horn." in
regal splendor on the blood money of
their American tenants and sneer at
anything American as unfit far their en
J.yraent or association. Borne of them
come over to "Uam.rlca you knaw"

Johnnies arter 20 years1 stay In America
that th.y were when they stepped upon
