Tracey Wegenhoft teaches science, art, and Texas history at St. Anthony School in Co-
lumbus. She is a former president of the Advisory Board of the Nesbitt Memorial Library, and has
served as a volunteer member of the staff of the Nesbitt Memorial Library Journal for several
years. She has also been active in the Live Oak Art Center in Columbus. Her drawing depicts four
former slave children on their way to their first day at a Freedman's Bureau school.
Acknowledgements and Notes
This issue presents the third and final installment of Barry A. Crouch's article on the
Freedmen's Bureau. The first two installments were pubished in the May 1995 and September 1997
issues. Crouch is a distinguished professor of history at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.
C., and the recipient of numerous awards and honors for his writing and his teaching. The library,
and indeed the county, are deeply indebted to Crouch, not only for the article, but because he
donated the xerographic copies of the source material, which he obtained at his own expense at the
National Archives, to the library.
