CHAPTER 391 H.B. No. 28
1 AN ACT
2 relating to rehabilitation programs for defendants housed in state
3 jail felony facilities.
4 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
5 SECTION 1i. Subchapter B, Chapter 507, Government Code, is
6 amended by adding Section 507.033 to read as follows:
7 Sec. 507.033. REHABILITATION PROGRAMS. (a) The state jail
8 division may allow a defendant who is capable of serving as a tutor
9 to tutor functionally illiterate defendants and shall actively
10 encourage volunteer organizations to aid in the tutoring of
11 defendants. A person who acts as a tutor may function only as a
12 teacher and advisor to a'defendant and may not exercise supervisory
13 authority or control over the defendant.
14 (b) The state jail division shall actively encourage
15 volunteer organizations to provide the following programs for
16 defendants who are housed in facilities operated by or under
17 contract with the division:
18 (1) literacy and education programs;
19 (2) life skills programs;
20 (3) job skills programs;
21 (4) parent-training programs;
22 (5) drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs;
23 (6) support group programs;
24 (7) arts and crafts programs; and
