Saturday night there was a
ftital fight ate the Italian jofnt,
down in the Brazos bottom,
about two milas above Par-
ker's lower atore. Two Mexi-
cans, whose names we have l>een
unable to ascertain, were killed,
one the front gallery of the joint
where he got his neck broken by
a lick, with a pole op rail, from
some unknown assailant, while
the other was shot through
three times just inside of the
saloon door. Two Italians,
Steve MondeJbana and Jasper
Courti wore arrested charge i
with the offence that night and
brought Suoday to jail here
where they remained till Monday
afternoon when the had examin-
ing trials. They were represent
ed by Measera Doremua and But-
ler, of Bryan, and both waived
voluntary statements.
Most of the witnesses spoke
broken Krglish, and nearly all
testified through an iuterpretor.
The testimony was badly mixed,
but tlw story condensed, reads
some tiling like this:

saloon. It was only a few min-
utes till a heavy thump was
heard on the front gallery. Then
some one hollowed "A Mexican
is killed". This caused the
bunch to begin to hunt for safe
places. There were six Italians
in the store and four of these hid
under the counter on the grocery
side of the building, only
"Steve" and '• Jasper" remain-
ing standing. About this time
a Mexican came in at the front
door with a gun drawn up in
position and began shooting in
behind the counter. One of the
Italians returned the fire with
hia gun and the Mexican was
shot down in his tracks. This is
a brief summary of what was de
veloped at the examining trial.
No one seems to know the name
of either of the dead Mexicans,
and it is the wonder of all, as to
who killed the one on the frout
gallery or what he struck him
with. It was a usual Saturday
night "fracas" in which no
darkies took part for they all
"skiddoed" when they heard the
shooting begin.
After considering the testi-
mony, the court admitted the
two Italians to bail in the $2,500
e ch which theyjiromplly jj.ve
and returned to their homes.
It was the belief of the offi'
cers that two negroes, Henry
evil and John Chappel, wit*
nesses in the case, knew more
than they would tell or were
guilty of participating in the
row and they were lodged in
jail pending futher investigation
of the affair.
