UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRIST HAGELSTEIN, OF PAINT ROCK, TEXAS.
BOLT-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,181, dated June 16, 1896.
Application filed November 4, 1895. Serial No. 567,872 (No model,)To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRIST IIAGELSTEIN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Paint
Rock, in the county of Concho and State of
5 Texas, have invented certain new and useful
Improvements in Bolt-Cutters; and Idohere-
by declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such
as will enable others skilled in the art to which
Io it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is a bolt-cutter; and it con-
sists of a stationary cutter and two movable
cutters operated by levers adapted to come
in contact with the edge of the stationary cut-
15 ter, with plates and bolts for securing the
same together in proper position.
The purpose of the cutter is to trim bolts
after the nuts have been screwed home, that
is, to cut off the end of the bolt close to the
20 upper face of the nut.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a
bottom view of my invention, handles closed.
Fig. 2 is a top view of my invention, handles
closed. Fig. 3 is a top view of my invention
25 with the top plate b removed. Figs. 4, 5, 6,
and 7 are detail views.
My invention is described as follows:
a is the bottom plate having a rectangular
opening a'. b is the top plate having an ob-
30 long opening b'. c is the center plate pro-
vided with circular depressions c' c' on its
front face and a depression c2 in its rear face,
(shown by the dotted lines g,) in which the
knife c3 is secured. The knife ca is provided
35 with a cutting edge c4. d are lever-arms hav-
ing circular joints d', adapted to work in cir-
cular depressions c' of plate c. Said levers
have, integral with them and said circular
joints, knives d2, having edges d', which im-
40 pinge against and cooperate with the edge c4
of the knife c, and thus cut off the end of the
bolt.
Plates a b c and circular joint d' are all pro-
vided with concentric bolt-holes e, and plates
45 a b c and knife ca are also provided with con-
centric bolt-holes e'. Said plates, knife and
levers are secured together by bolts e2.In operation the levers are opened, as shown
in Fig. 3, the plate a is slipped down over the
nut which comes partly up through the open- 50
ing a', and then the levers are brought together
and the bolt f, Fig. 3, is cut off by the knives
c3 and d2 above the nut.
Having described my invention, what I
claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 55
Patent, is-
1. The combination of the plate a, provided
with the rectangular opening a', and bolt-
holes e and e'; plate b, provided with the ob-
long opening b',andbolt-holes, concentric with 6o
bolt-holes e and e', of plate a; plate c, pro-
vided with circular depressions c', c', c2, and
bolt-holes concentric with bolt-holes e and e',
of plate a; knife c3, adapted to fit in the de-
pression c2, of the plate c; and having bolt- 65
holes concentric with bolt-holes e', of plate a;
levers d, provided with circular joints d',
adapted to work in depressions c', and having
each a bolt-hole concentric with bolt-holes of
plate c, and knives d2, the edges of which are 70
adapted to impinge against the edge of knife
c3, all the parts secured together by bolts and
nuts e2, substantially as shown and described
and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the plate a, provided 75
with an opening a'; plate b, provided with an
opening b'; plate c, provided with joint-sock-
ets, c', and a knife-socket c2; knife, c3, adapted
to fit in the socket c2; levers d, provided with
joints to correspond with the sockets of the 8o
plate c; and knives to cooperate with knife
c3, all being hinged and held together by bolts
or other equivalent, means, substantially as
shown and described and for the purposes
set forth. 85
In testimony whereof I affix my signature
in presence of two witnesses.
CHRIST HAGELSTEIN.
